I wonder why you do not understand. Your examples refer to testing. The valves have no position to verify or check correctness, but to test the water flow. A lever for "check position" initiates no flow or alarm. Your example is not applicable to the context. I cite:

Germans use the loanword "testen" often thoughtlessly for testing, as well as for checking, disregarding the differences. Only the word "kontrollieren" is correctly adopted from the French term "contrôler". Retranslation leads to errors, consequently. We should consider the verb "testen" as false friend, accordingly.

The Reliable Model TD Test and Drain Valve is a single-handle, tri-position ball valve allowing both testing of the waterflow alarm and draining of a wet-pipe for protection alarm.

This means alarm verification, typical for checking rather than testing and is no proof. This is no real test, but complies with the definition of check: This is a check that should be carried out by the employee/wearer of the device each time that they put it on, cited in my references.

Definitions prevail over manufacturer’s terminology. I would trust ISO, ASTM or BS, and English dictionaries.

Bei der normalen Funktion der Feststellbremse muss klar sein, dass der Druck in den Bremsen des Hängers nicht von ewiger Dauer sein kann. Deshalb hat hier das Feststell-Bremsventil eine direkte Leitung zum Anhänger-Steuerventil (Bild oben). Dadurch kann die Feststellbremse auch ohne die des Hängers betätigt werden. Jetzt ist die Situation hergestellt, die sich nicht mehr verändern kann. Bergauf oder -ab wird getestet, ob allein die Federspeicher den Lastzug sicher halten können. Vielleicht muss der/die Lkw-Fahrer/in auch ein wenig Motorkraft zum Testen einsetzen.

As testing and approvals engineer I was responsible for testing appliances and devices against safety standards. This comprised verification of construction and function and resistance to normal and abnormal stresses like electric shock, heating, overheating, electrical insulation and leakage current, moisture resistance, endurance, mechanical strength and hazards, rusting, etc. Most test were destructive. Checks are never destructive.
