What is the “Edge”? The ‘Edge’ refers to having computing infrastructure closer to the source of data.

курица или яйцо? Вот цитата из white paper по ссылке: Edge computing—the placement of content, compute, and storage resources at the edge
of the network—reduces latency and delivers the performance users need by shortening traffic flows and keeping
processing local to the applications and devices that consume data.

Собственно речь идёт о потреблении данных, а не о получении их от источников. Вообще, говоря об IoT, невозможно отделить потребителей и источники - они одновременно и те и другие.
Так что мы оба правы и неправы одновременно :)
Mikhail Zavidin Sep 22, 2019:
@Pavel Chistov the aim of Edge Computing is to move the computation away from data centers towards the edge of the network, exploiting smart objects, mobile phones or network gateways to perform tasks and provide services on behalf of the cloud. By moving services to the edge, it is possible to provide content caching, service delivery, storage and IoT management resulting in better response times and transfer rates. At the same time, distributing the logic in different network nodes introduces new issues and challenges.

Edge Share The edge is the physical location where things and people connect with the networked, digital world

In the context of IIoT, 'edge' refers to the computing infrastructure that exists close to the sources of data, for example, industrial machines (e.g. wind turbine, magnetic resonance (MR) scanner, undersea blowout preventers), industrial controllers such as SCADA systems, and time series databases aggregating data from a variety of equipment and sensors. These edge computing devices typically reside away from the centralize computing available in the cloud.

Термин граница (network boundary) сети имеет несколько отличную коннотацию. Это точка разделения между сетью оператора и (частной) сетью пользователя (МСЭ-Т K.66).
