Portuguese term

pedidos de desligamentos da empresa

Portuguese to English Bus/Financial Business/Commerce (general) Survey responses
This is a response to a company's survey of its employees.

I'm not sure if this means 'dismissals' or 'resignations' - I don't want to choose the wrong one!

Um dos pontos que ao meu ver tem um impacto elevado nos **pedidos de desligamentos da empresa** e um numero alto de reclamações, é a falta de reconhecimento na função exercida.

Muriel You're right. There is no need to request a resignation. Employees just submit their resignation to the HR department or their supervisor. No request involved. My bad :)
Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Oct 26, 2019:
Thank you! Thanks to everyone. My main question was whether it was referring to resignations or something else I wasn't aware of. As far as I know, employees in Brazil don't have to **request** permission to resign, unless perhaps there is a penalty in their contract.
Richard Purdom Oct 22, 2019:
Lara I think I'd just say resignations

In my opinion, one of the aspects that is having a big impact on resignations in the company is the high number of complaints and lack of recognition for the job performed.
Lara Barnett Oct 22, 2019:
@ Richard You are right, we would not say that unless there were specific conditions. So maybe "submit resignation" ?
Richard Purdom Oct 22, 2019:
Lara Tbh I can't find many references for requesting contract termination (unless maybe a reference to a footballer, but this is an employee survey), and in any case a request can be refused which would make an employee a slave, so it makes little sense, even if it is used in PT.
Lara Barnett Oct 22, 2019:
Request But this is all dependent on how the target phrase is structured, for example we can say "request to terminate contract".
Richard Purdom Oct 21, 2019:
you don't 'request' resignation in English anyway, you just resign!
Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Oct 21, 2019:
In the context It doesn't make sense to combine dismissals with complaints. That's why I posted the question. It seems illogical.

employment resignation requests

What is employment resignation? It’s really quite simple. Resignation is the process by which you officially end or terminate employment. There are many ways to submit an employment resignation; depending on the nature of your employment contract or the laws in your province, you may resign verbally or in writing. That being said, most employers will request written notification of your intent to resign – but why?

Human resources departments can be fastidious in their expectation to receive your employment resignation in writing. Usually added to your personnel file, written notice of resignation provides your company a record of the date your employment ended. This record can be used to protect the company in case any legal challenges come up, but it is also important with respect to processing the end of your employment for other legal reasons.

I also give significant weight to the fact that the employer was willing to consider severance requests from employees at non-closing stores.

Requests to terminate employment (contract)...

My idea is based on "like for like".... I.e.
I often go with representing a vague idea in the source languages with a similarly vague term in the target language, ie general for general, or alternatively specific for specific.

I think this goes to the root of the meaning, without the need to be over specific when it is unclear to us as translators.

In answer to your comment, I meant that if you are not clear whether this indicates dismissals or severances, in order to cover both situations, something more general like this is an option that can be used. I meant that it could be that the speaker/writer was also trying to be general and cover both situations (i.e. dismissals & also severances) perhaps.

..i.e. where a term can suggest two ideas in the other language, it could be that the speaker/writer is actually not intending to specify one or the other - and I agree this could mean either.

Following current discussion posts, perhaps "submit termination of employment contract". ??
Note from asker:
HI Lara, Have you read my context carefully? This interpretation just doesn't seem logical, which is why I posted the question.
