"Father-in-law was a *benign*, but mother-in-law had a stern personality.

Il s'agit d'une lettre de la mère à sa fille.

Le dictionnaire m'offre deux traductions de ce mot : "affable" et "bienveillant". Ne connaissant pas les personnages, j'hésite à choisir, même s'il me parait plus important pour un beau-père d'être bienveillant que d'être affable.

Y en aurait-il une troisième ?

Par conséquent affable ou bienveillant le semble convenir tout autant l'un que l'autre. Une troisième option pourrait peut-être doux. Le dernier critère pour faire le choix est le niveau de langue que vous voulez adopter, bienveillant étant plus répandu que affable dans le langage courant.
