English term or phrase: leaves us discussing
Standardization
Data for the sake of data has little value.
It is the insights we draw from it and the impact those have.
However, a lack of standardization ***leaves us discussing*** the data and who owns it, instead of figuring out how we can draw most value from it.
A lack of standardization also means that there is a lot of “noise” in the data.
There is often no clear focus on what data and what data level is needed exactly.

Mes tentatives :

leaves us discussing (the data and who owns it)

... a lack of standardization leaves us discussing the data and who owns it, instead of figuring out how we can draw most value from it.
=>
because there is no standardization all that is left to us as possible course of action is to argue between ourselves about what is the exact meaning/interpretation of the data and about who owns which data, ...

the "discussing" here has a negative connotation - it's a kind of "discussion" of the type best described as "se chamailler" - squabbling about who owns which data (this is not about not some lofty academic debate, it's about making money one way or another thanks to that data ). The practical consequence being that as you can use only the data you own, if someone else owns the rest of what makes a better usable set, you are both stuck nowhere instead of figuring out how we can draw most value from it
