English term or phrase: deserted by my geographical knowledge
One October afternoon of heavy grey skies after a spell of high winds and intensive rain, we had walked again from the neglected, littered area beyond the campsite, out along the sandy track leading to the south-east side of the pool. It became apparent that the water level was way down. There were very few birds. Even before we had reached the beach we could see that the usual natural sand barrier that maintains a good depth of water in the pool had been breached, allowing most of the contents of the pool to drain out to sea. Temporarily deserted by my geographical understanding, I was distraught at the fate of this prime wildlife site and immediately thought of going to the natural park authorities to find out whether they knew of the disaster and to see if they intended to do something about it.

  -> Thanks, Barbara!

neutral  Cecilia Gowar: It would be "por" not "de"/not ¨despido de¨, means nothing in Spanish.

  -> Yes, "despido de", "abandonado por". Do you agree with the rest?//And "abandonado" is that ok or do you have a better suggestion to post?
