German term

Ruschel

fracture(d) zone; shattered fault zone

I invested in Volker Schweizer's "Wörterbuch der Geologie / Dictionary of Geology" and he's a geologist by profession. This text was very useful to me in the mining translations I've done over the last 4 years.

The translated term is actually for Ruschelzone ... but the local miners have simply abbreviated the local term.

tectonic disruption zone / ruffle zone

Meaning of "Ruschel" in the German dictionary - Educalingo
https://educalingo.com › dic-de › rusche

Ruschel
Ruschel is an old miner's term from the Oberharz and denotes a tectonic disruption zone, in which the affected rocks are intensively shredded, crimped, crushed and crushed. As a rule, this structure forms along the lines of geological disturbances instead of the otherwise usual sharp separating surfaces. In mining, ruffle zones are hindering, since they are mostly non-corrosive and have low stability. However, if the ruffle zones are traversed by mineralizing hydrothermal solutions, they can, like breccias, facilitate the impregnation of the rock with ores and lead to so-called "floor" entanglement.
Note from asker:
Thanks. No, I am not translating the Wikipedia, Actually I am translating a 1905 article on mining Polish to English. I could not even find the meaning of this term in Polish, but there was the German equivalent in the original article, so I searched in German, and found the Wikipedia, which at least explains the meaning and gives a good context. Thanks for this discussion.

agree philgoddard : Yes, this is the meaning, though you obviously can't say "ruffle zone is an old mining term from the Oberharz." I'd leave it in German. Joanna appears to be translating a Wikipedia article.

Thanks, also for your peer comment!
neutral Steffen Walter : It is not really helpful (if not outright dangerous - mind the correct terminology!) to have the whole paragraph translated by DeepL or the like (hint: "crushed and crushed").
