Andrew Bramhall Aug 23, 2023:
You can be in 'material want' for sure.... ...but ' material dearth' is completely wrong;' dearth' always applies to a physical want, such as a 'dearth of job opportunities', a dearth of shots on goal in a football match, etc, etc

I just wanted to highlight that even ChatGPT warns about the medical information it provides. So there is the potential that an unsound term ends up in the body of knowledge that is ProZ.

I never said I was going to use its answer, I just wanted to see what kind of answer it threw out.

Experiencing hardship

I think, in the context of a yes/no answer, combined with being some sort of description for a category of patients, 'experiencing hardship' or 'likely to experience hardship' might be a more idiomatic expression for this kind of concept, précarité signifying insecurity and matérielle signifying material possessions.
Note from asker:
This is the perfect idiomatic expression for this context, thank you!

Material precariousness

"Précarité matérielle" in French translates as "Material precariousness" in English because it refers to the uncertain or unstable material or financial situation of individuals, indicating a lack of resources or stability in their material conditions. It relates to socio-economic factors such as income, housing, and material possessions.

Example sentences:
1. The study found that patients with neuroendocrine tumors who experienced material precariousness had higher levels of stress and anxiety.
2. People living in material precariousness often struggle to afford basic necessities such as food and shelter.
3. The assessment of material precariousness is important in understanding the potential barriers individuals may face in accessing healthcare services.

Are these examples real-world uses of this term or as you just making them up?

neutral Peter Shortall : I believe it makes them up, Emily. I saw another ChatGPT answer yesterday with example sentences that I couldn't find anywhere.

In these more politically correct times, perhaps " materially challenged?" might work well too.

Example sentence:

Substantial gaps in data exist on HIV burden and access to the HIV continuum of care among migrants living in this region, particularly individuals in precarious circumstances such as migrants with irregular status.

Those in precarious circumstances are limited in their ability to plan ahead, and deprived of safety nets, social support, economic certainty and flexibility.

This video indicates that "précarité matérielle" refers to isolation and exclusion of persons resulting specifically from their inability to access specific "materials" (e.g. hygiene products, phone, school supplies),

so the term is more specific than just "hardship", I think the word "material"must be included

the previous refs give examples of the use of 'insecurity' with reference to specific items (food, energy)

this ref also suggests that précarité matérielle refers specifically to an absence of certain necessary items:
https://www.jean-jaures.org/publication/les-francais-face-a-...

material dearth

another variation on a theme and implies a material or tangible dearth.

Ties up quite well with "Précarité d’accès aux soins" - namely, dearth of access to healthcare.

Otherwise, hard to incroporate the idea of material into penury or distressed circumstances: a common Anglo.Irish turn of phrase,

Not so much medical, more sociological.

MATERIAL DEARTH A SAFETY VALVE; Keeps Cost of Labor Within Range of Commercial Building Investor

tenuous financially / tenuous financial situation

The word "matérielle" boils down to financial, even though it means slightly more.

Another suggestion.

Perhaps might be helpful to look up translations for "travail précaire": people working for Uber Eats, on zero-hours contracts, all that lovely capitalist stuff.

Looks like "precarious" works just fine, so that would be my second suggestion.
