are self-employed
are not self-employed but you still send a tax return, for example because you receive income from renting out a property

Who must send a tax return
You must send a tax return if, in the last tax year (6 April to 5 April), any of the following applied:

you were self-employed as a ‘sole trader’ and earned more than £1,000 (before taking off anything you can claim tax relief on)
you were a partner in a business partnership
you had a total taxable income of more than £100,000
you had to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge
You may also need to send a tax return if you have any untaxed income, such as:

some COVID-19 grant or support payments
money from renting out a property
tips and commission
income from savings, investments and dividends
foreign income
Check if you need to send a tax return
You can check if you need to send a tax return if you’re not sure.

You must tell HMRC by 5 October if you need to complete a tax return and have not sent one before. You can tell HMRC by registering for Self Assessment.

Other reasons for sending a return
You can choose to fill in a tax return to:

claim some Income Tax reliefs
prove you’re self-employed, for example to claim Tax-Free Childcare or Maternity Allowance

Susana Gonzalez: The term "self-assessment" is so much globally known, that you can retain it in your Portuguese translation. For example, "Apresente a sua declaração de imposto Self Assessment online". Best!

-> Agradeço os comentários, mas não creio que o termo é conhecido no Brasil. A maioria da população nunca deve ter ouvido falar, até porque a maioria não fala inglês. Acho uma decisão equivocada deixar em inglês. O equivalente funcional seria declaração, IMO

O termo "self-" é chave para uma tradução correta. Note o uso de "self-employed" no próprio contexto. Autodeclaração é quando o contribuinte autônomo/independente declara o valor da sua renda. No caso de empregados, a renda é informada pelo empregador à Receita Federal, e o imposto, retido na fonte. No caso do autônomo, não. É ele próprio quem declara o valor, daí o termo "autodeclaração".

Self-assessment existe quando "cabe ao contribuinte calcular e pagar o imposto". Em PT-PT, o termo equivalente a self-assessment no que diz respeito aos impostos é a autoliquidação.

Self-assessment/autoliquidação não se limita à declaração pelo contribuinte do seu rendimento coletável mas inclui o cálculo do imposto a pagar.
