Discussion

Charlesp (asker) Sep 5, 2005:
The reason why I think it is something other than an attic or loft, is that those terms are used explicitly, elsewhere, but not here.
Charlesp (asker) Sep 5, 2005:
thanks for all the answers and suggestions. Schoenberg asked for the sentence: "varmetabet p grund of udstrling til himmelrummet i klart vejr..."
Maybe it is not an actual room?
Christian Schoenberg Sep 5, 2005:
Are you sure this refers to the actual room? Is there any way you could give us the sentence? Paul is right that it means space or sky but that seems a peculiar name for a 'room in a building/house'.

jeez lads there was an awful lot of hot air-space lost to the sky in that debate!

Peer comment(s):

neutral Pernille Chapman : Don't quite see how this can be used about a specific room? Can we have some more context from the asker?

agree Suzanne Blangsted (X) : this is now the best answer after asker's own comment

agree Christian Schoenberg : I agree with Blangsted...

agree Sven Petersson

agree Christine Andersen : The sentence must simply mean 'heat loss by radiation into the sky in clear weather' - ie a variation on 'at fyre for gråspurvene' - providing heating for the sparrows (through inadequate insulation).

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "yes, of course. "rum" doesn't always mean room, it can also mean space. And in this context is appears to mean an opening, an opening to the sky! "

room with cathedral ceiling

a room in the house where the ceiling is very high - term often used where the ceiling is at least 2 stories high

disagree Sven Petersson : Please see my answer and references!

skylight

This is a guess but it is difficult to say for definite since there is no context. A skylight is a window set in a roof or ceiling - does it fit the context?

open-air room/patio (roof patio)

It's difficult to be certain without the full context. It seems to have different meanings to different architects and lesser mortals (there is even such a thing as an 'open bath', which I can't imagine would generate much traction in frigid Denmark :-)) Anyway, do these terms suit your context?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Suzanne Blangsted (X) : you hit it on the nail with your question.
