Danish term

pleje og omsorg

Danish to English Social Sciences Medical: Health Care
I know these both mean care, but I am not sure what the difference is between them and I am not sure how to translate them when they come together in a sentence. I thought of "care and attention", but I don't think that seems right.

Example: Er der brug for meget pleje og omsorg kan der ydes hjælp fra hjemmehjælpere

Thanks in advance!

agree Dan Schioenning Larsen : or maybe nursing and attention... I see pleje as being the more medical side of it

agree Christine Andersen : Dan is right - 'pleje' is nursing, as in the 'plejesektor', 'plejehjem' etc. and 'omsorg' is more attention, TLC caring.

care

Just use care, it covers both concepts of the Danish word.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Christine Andersen : True to a point, but it is a very wide concept. 'Pleje' is (also) the professional kind provided by the 'hjemmehjælpere', while 'omsorg' is what the family and friends provide. They overlap, but there is a difference.

in this context I think "care" alone is sufficient

caregiving

Seems to cover both in the context of taking care of old people.

Here, you could say that basic caregiving is provided by family and friends, but if intensive caregiving is required, you call in the professionals.
