IT (Information Technology) / computing for businesses
Dutch term or phrase: centrale sessie
Apparently there is a "lokale" and "centrale sessie",
and I know it's something I will have heard of,
but I just can't think of it at the moment.

remote session
Explanation:
I'd go for remote in this context.
"Depending on the technology, the virtual desktop can either be accessed locally from the same physical machine or accessed remotely from the datacenter."

Unfortunately "centrale sessie" doesn't seem to be common usage for IT either... I'd make a note with this one or request more info.

Notes to answerer
Asker: I think that's probably right Lianne - much as I wanted to use "central session" for convenience, it doesn't seem to be used in IT at all.

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
agree  Serge Wolff: I agree with this option. Virtual session is another option. The word 'central' is more used in combination with data and databases.
