Dutch term
Ankerlieroliekasten
Dutch to English
Other
Ships, Sailing, Maritime

Marin, does your Lofran have the round sight glass to check the oil level for the winch gears. Your unit is much newer than mine I think, and I wonder how much they have changed the design over the years.

Another example is the oil pan of an engine. The oil is used to lubricate the engine's moving parts and it pools in a reservoir, known as a sump, at the bottom of the engine. Use of a sump requires the engine to be mounted slightly higher to make space for it. Often though, oil in the sump can surge during hard cornering starving the oil pump. For these reasons racing and piston aircraft engines are "dry sumped" using scavenge pumps and a swirl tank to separate oil from air which is also sucked up by the pumps.

Sorry Freek, but I don't really understand what you mean. What's wrong with 'oil box' of the 'anchor winch'?

Thanks Maarten, yeah 'anchor windlass oil tank' would work too, or any other variation. After all, the source says 'ankerlieroliekasten' and not 'ankerliermotoroliekasten'. However, '(anchor) windlass gearbox oil tank' would be fine too.

windlass gearbox
But before you tear into your windlass, do yourself a big favor and order a replacement seal kit for your particular windlass. The Internet will provide sources of parts, and also drawings or diagrams of your windlass. While this article is specific to the Lofrans Tigres windlass we own, it is of general use, as most electric windlasses follow the same general construction.
Lofrans recommends that the lubricating oil be changed every four years, and that’s where the fun begins. There’s no drain plug, only a filler hole and a sight glass for the oil level.

Vertical windlasses make up the majority of anchor winch sales. They are characterised by situating the capstan and/or gypsy above deck and the motor and gearbox below deck.

oil bath chain drive/gearbox/winch
revision of an oil bath winch (Nederlandse site)

This series of anchor winches, with either stainless steel or galvanized steel construction and oil bath chain drive, is the oldest and most proven of our chain drive anchor winches.
http://winches.jkfabrication.com/category/custom-hydraulic-w...
The installation of a VW 500 vertical winch mounted horizontally down inside the locker is an approved installation. The oil bath gearbox</> throws the oil around enough as soon as it is running to lubricate the bearing at the end of the worm gear efficiently.
http://pages.suddenlink.net/kmielen/C320Docs/Windlass.htm
Gearbox has high efficiency output drive with heavy-duty, wide-face, precision, bronze spur gears in a sealed oil bath. (Specifications differ depending on motor and winch rating).

Discussion
'anchor winch' > 'anchor windlass' (preference)
'oil box' > 'oil sump' (preference)
'anchor windlass oil sumps' > 'oil sumps of anchor windlasses' (preference. they mean the same thing)
But as I said, I know you cannot agree.
Freek's answer needs to be turned around though: 'oil tank gearbox windlass' (unidiomatic) > 'windlass gearbox oil tank' (better English).
If you change mine from: 'anchor winch oil boxes' to 'anchor windlass oil sumps', it rather resembles your '(gearbox) oil sumps of anchor windlasses'.
I now see that the part with the oil is probably an integral part of the winch/windlass. Therefore, omitting the 'gearbox' part probably isn’t such a crime against humanity.
If you see what I mean. :-)
'karma' is complex.
Mijn idee.
By the way, what do you think of my answer?
I know you cannot agree, but I hope you can think. :-)

And this one seems to take oil:
'At the front of the windlass is a sight glass for oil and an oil filler. ' (with a picture: http://www.allaboutsailing.co.uk/other-general-articles/90-w... )
Also, windlasses are often much smaller than anchor winches, and so the gearbox is part of the thing itself.
See:
'A windlass is a fairly simple mechanical device and worth spending a bit of time to get to know. Richard Arthur of Maxwell Marine recommends using CRC type spray on the electronics every season along with pulling the gearbox apart every three years to inspect the seals and change the oil.' (http://www.tongacharter.com/windlass.htm )
and
'The only ongoing maintenance your Lofrans windlass should require is periodic lubrication of the clutch cones plus checking of and, if necessary, topping off the oil system.' (http://www.russula.net/manuals/MECHANICs/Windlass LOFRANS CA... )
That is, the gearbox in a 'horizontal windlass' is usually above-deck, and the gearbox in a 'vertical capstan', is below decks.
…
(http://www.sv-jedi.org/sv_jedi/2007/02/onderhoud_anker.html )
