Het antwoord op de zo juist gestelde vraag werd bepaald door een aantal interpretatieregels. Zij gingen terug op Bartolus (1314-1357). De bekendste is: statuta stricte sunt interpretanda (Bartolus 1652, ad D. 1,1,9, nr. 53 **e.v.**). Het inheemse recht moest strikt worden uitgelegd.
