English term

\"secular litanies\"

English to French Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
"It might have been a car door or the muezzin’s call, yet already the air was alive with the secular litanies of the meeting place two hundred yards away."

Discussion

Philippe Lascourrèges Oct 2, 2016:
Car door A tourist joke !!
the call to prayer is quite strident and some visitors use to say that it sounds like the cry of pain of a person who would have stuck up his finger in a car door
Philippe Lascourrèges Oct 2, 2016:
Meeting place the meeting place may be the place where the faithful are gathering at the call of the muezzin
Catharine Cellier-Smart Sep 29, 2016:
More context is needed! Do you know what the 'meeting place' refers to?

neutral JohnMcDove : A "litany" however, is a religious prayer... Context is of the essence, but it sounds to me like the sound of the muezzin, repeated over and over... (?)

I had some doubts because of he muezzin's call as well but maybe (with the car door) they are two extremes of the litanies, it would help to know what this meeting place is.

Or better yet, "litanies ancestrales", "litanies très anciennes", "litanies séculaires", "très anciennes litanies"...
Peer comment(s):

neutral Catharine Cellier-Smart : Not convinced 'old' is the meaning here

No it is not "old" but "age-old", "ancestral", "from old". Without further context it is just a matter of guessing.
