It should be seen widely as an important profession and career track, rather than just a position derived from corporate counsel or human resources’ departments. The function should equate to that of the corporate general counsel in the top echelon of corporate management. **Chief ethics officers** should report directly to both the CEO and to the board of directors. This is the case at a few companies, but it should become the norm."
