Global integration comprises economic restructuring as a major component. It involves a systemic process of deregulation, liberalization and privatization. Originally viewed as facilitating market forces to determine needs, structural adjustment in the poorest countries has occurred only through the "power of compulsion or repressive reintegration". Given its ‘paradigmatic’ role, microcredit is a point of reference. Professing big changes: alleviating poverty and empowering women, it continues to hold attention as a development tool both in India and elsewhere. This study adds to the ongoing debate by further exploring through a multi-level analysis the role of microcredit with particular emphasis on its goals concerning women’s empowerment. In its exploration the study draws upon four cases in India which are ‘women centered’ viz. SEWA Bank, SHARE Microfin Limited, Sakhi Samiti and Informal (Unregistered) ROSCAs. Viewing them as alternative (new) institutional arrangements, outwitting dysfunctional and gender biased conventional banking - the study looked at how their recognition/understanding of gender influences their credit arrangements and relation with women borrowers – thereby facilitating both the credit process and enabling (empowering) women to negotiate their bargaining position and change their ‘habitus ‘. Given the inevitable up scaling of microcredit sector under liberalisation (or neoliberal paradigm), the study also attempts to place such alternative arrangements in a broader context of financial liberalisation process in India facilitating market forces and enunciating a shift in approach towards poverty and the poor, especially women.

"Piyasa güçlerine imkan sağlamak" ya da benzeri olarak "piyasa güçlerine olanak tanımak" yerine bir gücün "önünü açmak" ya da "önündeki engelleri kaldırmak" şeklindeki söylemin daha doğal olduğunu düşünüyorum.
