The concept of \'long duration\' refers to positions that will benefit from a rising market (i.e. from falling yields), but it doesn\'t specify the maturity range of such a long position. A portfolio with a duration of 1.5 years is a \'long duration\' position, even though 1.5 years is a short-term maturity range.
You shouldn\'t confuse the concepts of \'long/short positions\', \'long/short duration positions\' and \'long-term/short-term\'.

: Two problems: (1) Speculation "on the long run" is an oxymoron. (2) Why would corporate **cash managers** be trading bonds in the first place, and particularly with a short duration position?

1) you can speculate on both long or short term then there's no oxymoron here 2) this is what's written on the tin ;-) dunno why, but it is.
