French term or phrase: ancrage local
From the description of an art exhibit. All that comes to mind for ancrage is "local roots", put it doesn't seem quite right.

En 2006, l’Italie du Nord a fêté le cinquième centenaire de la mort de l’artiste à travers l’organisation de 14 expositions retraçant l’ancrage local du peintre dans ses différents foyers de création, notamment à Padoue, Mantoue et Vérone.

Thanks to everyone. I also really liked Emma's final suggestion, although unfortunately it came after I sent in my translation.

neutral  Bourth (X): "Roots" implies he was born there, which may well not be the case. Artists move about and may be "ancrés" there for a large part of their (later) lives.

very prosaic I know, but I get the impression that all this means is that he actually lived for a while in each of the places mentioned

also like "involvement"

I avoided (by the skin of my teeth!) "local commitment", as this usually implies the commitment of the locals (to something)
