Looking for an equivalent expression in English for this proverb (if it exists).

Here is the context, from the 2nd Act of the opera "Manon Lescaut":

MARGUERITE, vivement, aussitôt que le marquis est sorti.
Ne l’attends pas, et viens-t’en!

MANON
C’est un permis dont je ne peux me passer... pour voir Desgrieux.

MARGUERITE
Il aimera mieux que tu te passes de la permission...

MANON
Mais il le fallait absolument, et dans ce cas-là, on fait de nécessité…

MARGUERITE
Vertu!... allons donc! sans moi, tout à l’heure, Dieu sait ce qui allait arriver...
