German term

Geschlitzte Röcke, verschwitzte Böcke

May offend German to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature "Saying"
Translating a text about a mother wartning her son against "loose women" -

Wie es im Volksmund schon heißt: Geschlitzte Röcke, verschwitzte Böcke.

Any suggestions?

Ventnai (asker) Oct 3, 2006:
Thanks very much to everybody. You helped me a lot. I put "slit skirts, sweaty shirts" in the end. Not perfect I know, but I needed the word "slit" to be included. I'd like to award everybody some points, but I can't.
Ventnai (asker) Oct 3, 2006:
Sorry. Been working elsewhere this afternoon. The text is recent. It's supposed to be slightly erotic - I've now realised "mama" is not really "mama" at all
Nicole Schnell Oct 3, 2006:
Are you having fun?
Nicole Schnell Oct 3, 2006:
Ian - one more question: How old is this text? Context always helps as no colleague can ever provide excellent answers to mystery questions. I am sure you did some research and figured out that the only reference for this "saying" is a quite dubious site
Harald Pigall Oct 3, 2006:
my imagination was: if a girl have a wide open coat, something else she open to show more
Ventnai (asker) Oct 3, 2006:
His mother warns him about women in slit skirts. She says nearly all women have slit skirts and those who have more than one slit are sexually overactive. She finishes with the phrase above.
Ventnai (asker) Oct 3, 2006:
Thanks for the help so far - "slit" is important here as it comes up a lot in the rest of the text.

I made it up.

Peer comment(s):

disagree BrigitteHilgner : In the German original, this comment is not degrading to women. It's just men who get the wrong ideas. // To put it bluntly: the mother warns the girl that she might get raped.

Then why the warning from the mother? why is a girl getting raped? if women with two slits are sexually overactive, surely that isn't so far removed from being a harlot.
neutral Louise Mawbey : Really a comment to Brigitte (can't comment on whether answer is right or wrong) - but the asker says the mother warns the son and not the daughter. Seems to put the phrase in a different light.

neutral Erik Freitag : w/ Louise: The mother warns her son, so it means something along the lines of: "If you're after women with [geschlitzten Röcken], people think you're a [verschwitzter Bock]"./I chose "neutral" because I agree with Brigitte:The mother talks about men!

Surely you hit the wrong button, you meant "agree", even if I turned the phrase around a little.

if you dress like a slut men will think you're easy to get into bed

doesn't rhyme but is more or less what is being said here

if you wear revealing clothing don't be suprised when men think you're a slut

loose clothes, loose morals

very much a paraphrase but perhaps conveys the message that the mother is trying to get across.
