Greek term

"φασούλι"

Greek to English Social Sciences Government / Politics
Φυτρώνει αναιτιολόγητα και ξαφνικά σαν "φασούλι".

Words spoken in a debate. This is a rejection of someone's opinions or arguments.

What is the flavour of this "bean"? I'm not sure there's an equivalent idiom in English, but any explanation or comments will be appreciated. Thanks

Discussion

Nick Lingris Nov 10, 2006:
Probably the equivalent of "bringing up an old chestnut" in this case?
Dylan Edwards (asker) Nov 10, 2006:
In this case, it seems to be an inappropriate remark (a pejorative term which the speaker is objecting to) which φυτρώνει σα φασούλι.
Dylan Edwards (asker) Nov 10, 2006:
φασούλι Are there other examples of the use of φασούλι in Greek which would help to throw some light on this?

butts in

This is an undocumented idiom and I hadn't heard it for some time.
We say "φυτρώνει σαν ..." with a variety of other words, meaning the same as the better known "φυτρώνει εκεί που δεν τον σπέρνουν", i.e. butts in, speaks out of turn, pokes his nose into other people's businesses etc.

BTW, we have an equivalent idiom that is even more informal:
πετιέται σαν πορδή
Note from asker:
Thanks, Nick. This helps me get the feel of the idiom.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you! Your suggestions, and Nadia's too, could all be used, depending on the exact context. In this case the speaker is objecting to a slur or pejorative comment which has been thrown in just like that, for no good reason - "words spoken out of turn"."

Greek term (edited): φασούλι

turn up like a bad penny

This is the equivalent of "φυτρώνω εκεί που δεν με σπέρνουν", which I would say is the meaning of "φασούλι" in your case, although I have never heard the word "φασούλι" used in this context.
Note from asker:
That's a good one. Thanks.
