agree  Ildiko Santana: "It is an identification number issued to health care providers." I fully agree with your definition. There are country-specific equivalents, e.g. in the UK & Canada: Health Services Identifier, in Australia: Healthcare Provider Identifier.

neutral  Katalin Szilárd: This is definitely not the same. In Hungary this is called egészségügyi szolgáltató azonosítószáma (provider identifier) and it's not equivalent with NPI. See the codes here: http://tinyurl.com/6oowald + See my answer note added

We have to create a new English term, because there is no such identification in the English systems.

"The NPI contains no embedded intelligence; that is, it contains no information about the health care provider, such as the type or location of the health care provider."

Az ágazati azonosító rendszer felépítése

Minden új egészségügyi szolgáltató és egységei a működés engedélyeztetése során az ÁNTSZ illetékes megyei intézetétől kap azonosítót. Az egészségügyi szolgáltatók ágazati azonosító rendszere azonosítja az egészségügyi szolgáltatókat és az általuk nyújtott szakfeladatokat és szervezeti egységeiket, valamint az önálló egészségügyi szolgáltatókat, háziorvosi és egyéb alapellátókat.
A szolgáltató 9 jegyű azonosítót kap. Több telephely és/vagy székhely esetén az azonosító első négy karaktere mindig azonos a szolgáltató első engedélyében feltüntetett négy jeggyel.
Kódszám: jelsorozat (az első 2 pozícióban számjegy, ezt követően lehet betű is), amely kerület vagy megyekód (II. rész), ellátás kódja, szakma kódja (III. rész).
Azonosító: kód- és sorszámokból felépített 9 jegyű jelsorozat, amely a szolgáltatót, valamint annak szervezeti egységeit országosan azonosítja.
Az ágazati azonosító az egészségügyi szolgáltatók szakmai besorolásán alapul, az ágazati adatszolgáltatás céljaira szolgál. Nem váltja fel az államigazgatási rendszerben használt egyéb azonosítókat.
Ezt az azonosítót kell alkalmazni az egészségügyi szolgáltatásokról készülő jelentésekben és egyéb dokumentációkban a szolgáltatást nyújtó egészségügyi intézmények és munkahelyek, valamint a további egészségügyi szolgáltatást igénylő, beküldő orvosi munkahelyek azonosítására.

A) Egészségügyi intézetek
- Fekvőbeteg-intézetek és integrált intézeteik.
- Önálló járóbeteg-szakellátó intézetek.
- ÁNTSZ megyei, fővárosi intézetei.
- Egyéb intézetek.
Az azonosító felépítése:
Hossza 9 pozíció
Az intézet egyedi azonosítója:
1-4. pozíció: az első 2 pozíció a megye, fővárosi kerület kódja a tevékenység helye szerint (II. rész alapján), ezt követi az intézet sorszáma.
Az egyetemek jelölése a 3. pozíción a "4-es" számjegy használatával történik.
Példa:
1. Az egyetemek kód képzésénél általános szabály:
első 2 pozíció: megyekód
A harmadik pozíció: mindig a "4" számjegy
A negyedik pozíción a "Kar" jelölésére szolgáló számjegy
Pl.: Semmelweis Egyetem, Budapest: 014 ...
0140 - Általános Orvostudományi Kar
0144 - Egészségtudományi Kar
0142 - Fogorvostudományi Kar

Egészségügyi szolgáltató kódja -> that would be the national provider identifier BUT! as you can below this there is ÁGAZATI AZONOSÍTÓ. So they are 2 different things.

As you can see below the 2 codes are totally different. They are not the same.

Egészségügyi szolgáltató kódja -> this is the national provider identifier (NPI) BUT! as you can see we need ÁGAZATI AZONOSÍTÓ. They are 2 different things.

neutral  Virág-Lilla Rácz: Yes, we can create a new term in English with the risk that fewer people will understand it than if offered a near equivalent (NPI) which they are familiar with, maybe pointing out the main differences in a footnote.

disagree  Ildiko Santana: I don't recommend "creating" a new term for sg. that is already in place. Country-specific variations have already been mentioned on this page (US: National Provider Identifier, UK & Canada: Health Services Identifier, Au: Healthcare Provider Identifier)
