I think the process is rather like modern watercolour techniques, where you have to stretch the paper by taping it to a board and wetting it. Otherwise it wrinkles. So whilst 'smoothing' gives the idea, I think if you want to get across a more technical feel, you should use 'stretching,' which is effectively the process of smoothing wrinklable(??) surfaces:)
