Russian term

набережная

Russian to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering

Discussion

natasha stoyanova Apr 4, 2008:
When it is public/famous enough there's no need of adding "street". But it is your choice.
Andrey Belonogov (asker) Apr 3, 2008:
нашёл! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thames_Embankment
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Embankment
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Embankment

Andrey Belonogov (asker) Apr 3, 2008:

Kosmodamianskaya Embankment Street ???
natasha stoyanova Mar 28, 2008:
By the way, if it is popular enough as "Kosmodamianskaya quay" - on sites, maps, etc. it is better to keep up witn this name, no matter if it is correct or not. There are many samples of "misunderstood" public names
Vladimir Dubisskiy Mar 28, 2008:
Well, yes, it's 100% Russian name and located in Moscow, that's why "Most of the sources that mention "Kosmodamianskaya quay" are from .ru domains". But i am not arguing, just another opinion - it's up to asker, really.
Mikhail Kropotov Mar 28, 2008:
Also, you said "I believe, embankment is more about construction (civil engineering) than architectural term." If you look closely, the asker's indicated Construction/Civil Engineering as the field. Enough said.
natasha stoyanova Mar 28, 2008:
As I see it, quay is a specially build structure, like a river sleeve, to be used as a dock, so if the street is along the quay, it will be ... quay; if it is on the river bank, it is embankment, is it not?
Mikhail Kropotov Mar 28, 2008:
Most of the sources that mention "Kosmodamianskaya quay" are from .ru domains. I.e. the least reliable sources.
Vladimir Dubisskiy Mar 28, 2008:
Mikhail, when saying "однозначно принято" I mean exclusively Космодамианская набережная - and, yes, it's only my guess, based on those findings ('quay' used by some Board of Architecture and realtors etc.). Nothing else.
Mikhail Kropotov Mar 28, 2008:
Thanks, Natasha. Like I said, no problem there.
What I'd like Vladimir to do is reconsider his claim that "тут однозначно принято именно это название." It has no basis in reality, does it, Vladimir?
natasha stoyanova Mar 28, 2008:
Vladimir, I did not comment on your answer; I agree with it. In London, there is an area called the Docklands, Surrey quays, etc. I meant that Mikhail may omit "river" from his suggestion. :)
Vladimir Dubisskiy Mar 28, 2008:
to natasha: here is 'quay' (in London :-)): Thames Quay (that's what i mean when talking 'urban environment' : www.chelseaharbourliving.co.uk/thames_quay.html
Mikhail Kropotov Mar 28, 2008:
I have no problem with that.
natasha stoyanova Mar 28, 2008:
To Mikhail: In London, saying the Embankment or Victoria embankment, one never thinks of other meanings of "embankment". I'd rather say when one means embankment in terms of rail/engineering fills, dykes, etc, then one has to specify it as "rail" or "land

What is the difference between embankment and quay?
Quay is not (or should not be) used to refer to the paved road of набережная.

embankment
n.
1. a wall or bank of earth or stone built to prevent a river flooding an area.
2. a bank of earth or stone built to carry a road or railroad over an area of low ground.

quay
n.
A wharf or reinforced bank where ships are loaded or unloaded.

Kosmodamianskaya Quay

That's how they call it. I believe in this case "Quay" is already in use by various sources.

Very briefly:

I believe, "embankment" is more about construction (civil engineering) than architectural term; like say "levee, dam, dike ". You may check the Dictionaries (say Lingvo12):
embankment:

3rd meaning: набережная
синонимы: quay, wharf

then look for
quay:

If we talk about some urban architectural environment (like in the case) "quay" is preferable (well, at least to me).
