hmmm... rereading this you are probably right, in which case I would go with your answer.... candidate elect is certainly very odd in English... and in Spanish, I suspect....

: candidate-elect may be clear as mud, but it seems to be in common usage. See below, candidate elect for attorney general, candidate elect for california state treasurer.....maybe its a californiaism, but I saw candidate elect for mayor of london as well.
