De Nacht van Kunst & Wetenschap is volop in beweging, we leggen momenteel de laatste hand aan het programma voor dit jaar. Ga tjjdens de Nacht op zaterdag 2 juni op ontdekkingstocht langs 14 locaties in de binnenstad van Groningen en maak kennis met nieuwe muziek, theater, dans, wetenschap, kunst, cabaret en bijzondere experimenten. Je hebt de keus uit ruim 200 sprekers, singer-songwriters, experimenten, tentoonstellingen, voorstellingen, acts, bands en speciaal gemaakte interactieve kunstprojecten. De Nacht is dit jaar onderdeel van de GA! Groningen Campagne (Gezond & Actief Groningen – Healthy Ageing Stad) en staat vanwege het EU year of Active Ageing & Solidarity between the Generations in het teken van Healthy Ageing, oftewel over hoe we langer gezond en actief kunnen leven. Oorsprong van De Nacht
De Nacht van Kunst & Wetenschap is gestart als slotfestival van de viering van het 395-jarig bestaan van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Het thema van dat lustrum was Arts Meet Science. Dat was aanleiding voor de organisatie van het lustrum om contact te zoeken met het Groninger Museum om gezamenlijk een mooi festival te organiseren.
Ontwikkeling van de De Nacht
Het initiële idee achter De Nacht was om een kleine Groninger variant van de Museumnacht met een wetenschappelijke twist te organiseren. Door al het enthousiasme bij alle culturele- en kennisinstellingen groeide de eerste editie op 13 juni 2009 uit tot een festival met 14 locaties dat ruim 15.000 bezoekers trok. De Groninger binnenstad stond geheel in het teken van verschillende kunstdisciplines en wetenschap. De bezoekers konden tijdens de Nacht genieten van lezingen, workshops, tentoonstellingen, debatten, wetenschappelijke experimenten, muziek en unieke voorstellingen waar kunst en wetenschap elkaar ontmoetten. Het enthousiasme van pers en publiek was zo groot dat een vervolg erop niet kon uitblijven.
In mei 2010 zijn de initiatiefnemers weer om tafel gaan zitten, ideeën werden geopperd, partners gevonden en plannen gesmeed. Dankzij het Akkoord van Groningen* en het Groninger Museum was het mogelijk om een geweldige tweede editie van de Nacht neer te zetten op 4 juni 2011 die met nog meer podia minstens even succesvol was.
Derde Nacht van Kunst en Wetenschap op 2 juni 2012
Vol trots kunnen we zeggen dat de derde ‘Nacht’ zal plaatsvinden. Op 2 juni zal de binnenstad van Groningen weer gehuld zijn in een bijzondere festivalsfeer in het kader van Kunst & Wetenschap. Met muziek, dans, theater, lezingen, workshops, wetenschap en vooral veel cross-over projecten. Het thema van deze editie voor de wetenschapsprogrammering is Healthy Ageing, een van de talenten van Groningen.
De Nacht zal jaarlijks worden georganiseerd tot 2015 en hopelijk nog vele jaren daarna. Volgend jaar op zaterdag 8 juni 2012 zal de Nacht in het teken staan van “energie” en vanwege het Rusland jaar een Russische twist krijgen. In 2014 bestaat de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen 400 jaar, dat wordt groots gevierd met als afsluiter van dat verjaardagsfeest de Nacht op 14 juni 2014 met als thema duurzaamheid.

City of Talent
Onder de vlag van City of Talent laat Groningen zich gelden als stad waar talent de ruimte krijgt. Ruimte om te groeien. Ruimte om het beste uit jezelf te halen. Ruim 50.000 studenten zijn daar dagelijks mee bezig. Dat doen ze niet alleen aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, de Hanzehogeschool Groningen of aan het UMCG, maar ook op talloze cultuurpodia.
City of Talent wil bewijzen waarom Groningen een stad vol talent is. Iedere dag weer. Hoe we dat doen? Met De Nacht van Kunst & Wetenschap bijvoorbeeld. Tijdens dit nachtelijke evenement in de binnenstad laten de kennisinstellingen zien wat voor verborgen schatten ze in huis hebben. Lesgebouwen worden hiervoor omgebouwd tot levende laboratoria. Wetenschappers zetten hun uitvindingen op straat en laten burgers proefjes doen. Jonge en gevestigde kunstenaars breken buiten de vier muren van het museum. Bekende en onbekende muzikanten treden overal in de binnenstad op. Alles wat Groningen aan talent heeft, krijgt voor één Nacht een podium. Dat is typisch Groningen, City of Talent

General information
The Night of Arts & Sciences is coming together fast, at the moment the finishing touches are being made to this year's programme. During The Night on Saturday 2 June, you can explore the activities at 14 locations in Groningen's city centre and discover new music, theatre and dance performances, science, art, cabaret and extraordinary experiments. There are over 200 speakers, singer-songwriters, experiments, exhibitions, performances, acts, bands and specially made interactive art installations you can visit. This year is the European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations and because of this, The Night is part of the GA! Groningen Campagne (Gezond & Actief Groningen – Healthy Ageing Stad) and is all about Healthy Ageing, i.e. how we can live an active and healthy life. Origins of The Night
The Night of Arts & Sciences came to life as the closing festival of the celebration of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen's 395th anniversary. That lustrum had Arts Meet Science as its theme, and the organization at the time thought this was a great oppurtunity to join forces with the Groningen Museum to organize an impressive festival.
Development of The Night
Initially, The Night was envisioned as a small, Groninger version of the Dutch / Flemish Museum Night with a scientific twist. However, because all cultural and knowledge centers turned out to be very enthusiastic about the initiative, the 1st edition soon outgrew its original layout and on 13 June, 2009, the festival was being held across 14 locations in the city and attracted over 15000 visitors. That Night, various disciplines within the arts and sciences could be found on every corner of Groningen's city centre. Visitors were able to attend and enjoy lectures, workshops, exhibitions, debates, scientific experiments, music and unique exhibitions wherein art and science merged. The festival received such positive feedback from both press and public that there was no doubt about the possibility of a 2nd edition.
In May 2010, the original crew met again to bounce ideas off of each other, find partners and make plans. With the help of Het Akkoord van Groningen* and the Groninger Museum it was made possible to organize a successful and even bigger 2nd edition of The Night on 4 June, 2011.
3rd Night of Art & Science on 2 June, 2012
We are proud to announce the 3rd installment of The Night. On 2 June, Groningen's city centre will again host this special festival, bringing a diverse programme mixing music, dance, theatre, readings, workshops, science and cross-over projects to the city. This year's theme for the science part of the programme is Healthy Ageing, one of Groningen's areas of talent.
For now, it is certain that The Night will be organized annually until 2015, and we have good hopes that The Night will continue for many years thereafter. Next year in Friday 8 June, 2013, The Night will be all about "energy" with a Russian twist, as that year will be focused on the relationships between The Netherlands and Russia (Nederland-Ruslandjaar). In 2014, the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen will extensively celebrate its 400th anniversary, with as its final piece The Night on 14 June, 2014, which will have durability as its theme.

City of Talent
Under the guise of City of Talent, Groningen will present itself as a city where talent is given space. Space to grow. Space to develop and to be the best you can be. This is what more than 50.000 students are working on on a daily basis. And this not only takes place within the walls of the University of Groningen, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences or the University Medical Center Groningen, but also on a great many stages and platforms.
The goal of City of Talent is to prove that Groningen is a city teeming with talent. Again and again. And how do we do this? By organizing an event like The Night of Arts & Science, for instance. During this nighttime event in the city centre, knowledge and educational institutions show what treasures they have hidden within their walls. Faculty buildings will be transformed into living, breathing laboratories. Scientists will bring their inventions to the street and will let the public perform experiments. Both young talent and established artists will bring their work outside the walls of the museum. Known and unknown musicians will perform all around the city centre. All of Groningen's talent will have the chance to show what they've got during this one Night. This is Groningen, City of Talent.

Thema For Infinity
De Rijksuniversiteit Groningen is een universiteit die al vier eeuwen bestaat en nog heel veel eeuwen meer wil blijven groeien en bloeien. Die met haar onderwijs, onderzoek en andere bijdragen aan de maatschappij wil werken aan een duurzame en evenwichtige wereld. Geen wonder dat de keuze voor het lustrumthema is gevallen op 4∞. De combinatie van het cijfer 4 en het wiskundige symbool voor oneindigheid ∞ ziet eruit als 400 en klinkt in het Engels als ‘For Infinity’. En dat is precies wat de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen wil uitstralen: we willen er altijd zijn (‘for infinity’), maar ook werken voor en aan de toekomst (‘for infinity’).
De zienswijze van de RUG op ‘For Infinity’
‘For Infinity’ past bij de ambitie van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen om kennis en begrip te genereren voor ons nageslacht. In de maatschappij ligt de meeste nadruk vaak op actuele zaken en snelle oplossingen. Daarentegen wil de RUG tegenwicht bieden door het creëren en verbreiden van wetenschappelijke kennis en begrip met waarde en nut op de langere termijn. Dit thema staat niet alleen in een 400-jarige traditie van deze universiteit, maar verwijst juist ook naar haar ambitie. Dit komt tot uiting in alle vakgebieden die de universiteit heeft. Maar het geldt in het bijzonder in drie speerpunten van het onderzoek , die bijdragen aan duurzame oplossingen voor wereldwijde uitdagingen: duurzame maatschappij, energie en gezond ouder worden.
DNA van Groningen
De Rijksuniversiteit Groningen wil veel mensen bij het lustrumprogramma For Infinity betrekken. De RUG is de één na oudste nog bestaande universiteit van Nederland en de enige universiteit in het Noorden. Stad en omgeving maken de universiteit tot wat zij is, maar het omgekeerde geldt evenzeer. Al 400 jaar draagt de RUG bij aan de ontwikkeling en de werkgelegenheid in stad en regio. Bovendien heeft de stad zo’n 193.000 inwoners, waarvan zo’n 30.000 student zijn (deels afkomstig uit het buitenland). Zij zorgen voor een altijd levendige sfeer in Groningen. Verder wonen veel van de meer dan 8.000 medewerkers met hun gezinnen in de stad, evenals vele oud-medewerkers, oud-studenten en natuurlijk toekomstige studenten! Alles bij elkaar geeft die situatie de stad Groningen iets eigens, een heel speciaal DNA met een bijzondere aantrekkingskracht. Oud-studenten die zijn uitgewaaierd kennen dat DNA, dat van blijvende waarde is, en dragen het met zich mee. Samen met Stadjers, inwoners van het Noorden, (oud-)studenten, (oud-)medewerkers, gasten van nationale en internationale collega-instellingen, en vertegenwoordigers van overheden en bedrijfsleven gaan we in 2014 het bestaan van dit Groningse DNA vieren!

Dertien jaar geleden bedacht prof.dr. Ton Schoot Uiterkamp het thema 4∞ al joggend, bij deze boom (foto) aan de Kerklaan in Haren. Hij zag in dat dit een uitgelezen kans was het onderwerp duurzaamheid te koppelen aan het programma voor het 400-jarig bestaan van de RUG.
Geschiedenis
De Rijksuniversiteit Groningen bestaat in 2014 400 jaar. Na de Universiteit Leiden is Groningen de oudste universiteit van Nederland. Sinds 1614 heeft de RUG een rijke academische traditie opgebouwd en veel bijzondere personen in haar gemeenschap gehad, onder wie een Nobelprijswinnaar, de eerste vrouwelijke student en de eerste vrouwelijke lector in Nederland, de eerste Nederlandse ruimtevaarder, en de eerste president van de Europese bank.
In 1614 stichten de Staten van Stad en Ommelanden een universiteit. De universiteit begint met zes hoogleraren voor de faculteiten theologie, rechten, geneeskunde en de vrije kunsten. Eerste rector magnificus is Ubbo Emmius (1547-1626). De nieuwe ‘illustre school’ wordt gehuisvest in de leegstaande kloostergebouwen aan de Broerstraat en ontwikkelt zich voorspoedig. Zij weet beroemde geleerden aan zich te binden. Met als gevolg dat veel buitenlandse studenten naar Groningen komen, het merendeel afkomstig uit de Duitse grensgebieden. Van de in totaal 12.000 studenten in de 17de en 18de eeuw is een derde deel van buitenlandse afkomst.
Oorlogen en politieke twisten tussen Stad en Ommelanden leiden ertoe dat de universiteit aan het eind van de 17de eeuw een periode van verval doormaakt. In de tweede helft van de 18de eeuw volgt herstel en nemen de studentenaantallen toe. In de Franse tijd blijft de universiteit bestaan en is enige tijd een ‘keizerlijke’ universiteit. In 1815 volgt een nieuwe status als Rijkshogeschool, samen met Leiden en Utrecht. Erg stevig is deze positie niet, de regering in Den Haag bezuinigt en opheffing dreigt. De situatie verbetert ingrijpend met de bouw van een groter en ruimer Academiegebouw op het Broerplein in 1850.
Een nog groter positieve invloed heeft de Wet op het Hoger Onderwijs in 1876. Op de hogeschool, die voortaan Rijksuniversiteit heet, wordt het Latijn als voertaal afgeschaft en bij de onderwijstaak komt de taak onderzoek te verrichten. Het aantal vakgebieden wordt uitgebreid met onder meer de moderne talen en er zijn investeringen in faciliteiten en de bouw van onderzoekslaboratoria. Een stevige domper op deze ontwikkelingen is de verwoesting door een brand van het Academiegebouw in 1906
Van deze tegenslag herstelt de universiteit zich snel. In 1909 kan een nieuw Academiegebouw feestelijk worden geopend. Vijf jaar later is dit gebouw het middelpunt van een grootse viering van het 300-jarig bestaan. Sindsdien, met uitzondering van de periode voorafgaand en gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog, groeit de universiteit van iets meer dan 600 studenten in 1914 naar meer dan 28.000 studenten. En de groei is er nog niet uit. Bij het 400-jarig bestaan zullen er naar verwachting meer dan 30.000 studenten zijn, van wie 5.000 van buitenlandse herkomst.

Lustrumvieringen
Een viering van het lustrum van de universiteit vindt eigenlijk voor het eerst plaats in 1814 bij het 200-jarig bestaan. Studenten laten zich hierbij niet onbetuigd. Zij organiseren een maskerade door het centrum van Groningen, die grote publieke belangstelling trekt. Een traditie is geboren, want bij volgende lustra in de 19de eeuw worden eveneens maskerades gehouden. Deze optochten zijn het hoogtepunt van iedere lustrumviering.
Eind 19de eeuw raakt de maskerade op z’n retour. Door de steeds grootsere opzet worden ze te duur. Bovendien vindt men deze vorm van viering niet meer in de tijd passen. In navolging van andere universiteiten komt in de plaats van de studentenmaskerade een openluchtspel.
Na 1945 kregen de lustrumvieringen een ander karakter. Er komt een breed feestprogramma, dat erop gericht is de universiteit meer bekendheid te geven en de inwoners van stad en regio te betrekken. Zo zijn bij de laatste lustra altijd grote slotfeesten georganiseerd, die voor iedereen open stonden.
Ook in 2014 zijn de lustrumfestiviteiten op een breed publiek gericht. Bezoekers zullen verrast worden met tal van activiteiten. Dan zal ook de aloude traditie van de studentenmaskerade terugkeren, maar dan wel in een moderne versie.

The university is a university that wants to contribute to a durable and well-balanced society by means of education, research and other contributions. Therefore it shouldn't come as a surprise that the theme for this anniversary is 4∞. The combination of the number 4 and the mathematical symbol for infinity ∞ looks like 400 and is pronounced in English as "For Infinity". And that is exactly what the University of Groningen wants to project: We want to exist for ever ("for infinity"), but we also want to work for and on the future ("for infinity").
The University of Groningen's view on "For Infinity"
"For Infinity" fits the University of Groningen's ambition to generate knowledge and understanding for the generations to come. In society, emphasis is usually on current affairs and quick solutions. But what the University of Groningen wants, is to counterbalance this by creating and sharing scientific knowledge and understanding that have value and usefulness in the long term. The theme does not only fit the university's 400-year-old tradition, but also fits its ambitions for the future. This is reflected in all subject areas the university has on offer, but is especially the case when referring to the three cornerstones of our research, that all contribute to sustainable solutions to global challenges: sustainable society, energy and healthy ageing.
Groninger DNA
The University of Groningen wants to involve lots of people in the programme For Infinity. The University of Groningen is the second-oldest surviving university of The Netherlands and the only university in the North. City and surroundings define the university, but this also works the other way around.The university has been contributing to the development of and creating job opportunities in the city and surroundings for 400 years. They provide an always vibrant atmosphere in Groningen. And then there are the over 8,000 university employees, many of whom live in the city with their families. But let’s not forget all the former employees, alumni and, of course, future students! All this put together gives Groningen something special, a very special kind of DNA with a unique appeal. Alumni that have spread around the country and the globe, know that DNA, that never loses its appeal, and carry it with them. Together with Stadjers, inhabitants of the North, alumni, students, (former) employees, guests of national and international fellow institutions, and representatives of government and business industries we are going to celebrate the existence of this DNA in 2014!

He recognized that this was an excellent opportunity to link the subject of sustainability to the programme for the University of Groningen's 400th anniversary.
History
In 2014, the University of Groningen will be 400 years old. In the Netherlands, only the University of Leiden is older. Since 1614, the University of Groningen has been working on a rich academic tradition and has (had) many an extraordinary person in its community, like a Nobel prize winner, the first female student and the first female lecturer of The Netherlands, the first Dutch astronaut and the first president of the European Central Bank.
In 1614 the Staten van Stad en Ommelanden (States of City and Surrounding Lands) founded a university. The university set off with 6 professors for the faculties of theology, law, medicine and the liberal arts. Ubbo Emmius (1547-1626) was the first rector. The new "illustrious school" is housed in the vacant monastery buildings on the Broerstraat and is flourishing. The university is succesful in drawing in famous scholars, which result in many foreign students coming to Groningen, mostly from the German border regions. Of the 12,000 students in the 17th and 18th century, a third is from abroad.
Wars and political disputes between city and surrounding lands caused the university to fall into decline at the end of the 17th century. In the second half of the 18th century, however, a period of recovery begins with student numbers increasing. During the French-Batavian period the university persists and can even call itself an "imperial" university for a while. In 1815 the university gained recognition as a national college of higher education, together with Leiden and Utrecht. This is not an extremely secure position though, as the government in The Hague is cutting budgets and discussing closure. The situation improves dramatically with the construction of a larger Academy Building on the Broerplein in 1850.
The Higher Education Act of 1876 had an enormous impact upon the development of the university. The State College was renamed a State University (Rijksuniversiteit) and Latin was replaced by Dutch as the official language. The university was to continue its educational activities but also take on research responsibilities. The number of academic fields is extended with modern languages, among others, and there are investments in faculties and the constructions of research laboratories. A fire that demolished the Academy Building in 1906 threw a spanner in the works of these developments, but this setback did not hold the university back for long, and in 1909 the new Academy Building is festively inaugurated. Five years later this building is at the centre of a grand celebration of the 300th anniversary of the university. Since then, the university has grown from just over 600 students in 1914 to over 28,000 students now (with the exception of the period leading up to and during WOII). And the end of this development is not yet in sight. On the day of the 400th anniversary, there will be an expected 30,000 students attending the university, of which 5,000 are from abroad.

Anniversary celebrations
The first celebration of the university anniversary took place in 1814, when the university is 200 years young. Students were very active in this jubilee. They organized a masquerade through the centre of Groningen, to great public appeal. This was the birth of a tradition, as at every next lustrum celebration in the 19th century, masquerades were being held. These processions were the highlight of each lustrum celebration, but at the end of the 19th century, these masquerades were in decline, as the increasingly grandiose setup made them prohibitively expensive. Besides, people started to think of this form of celebration as slightly dated. Following the example of other universities, the student masquerade made way for an open air theatre.
After 1945 the anniversary celebrations took on a different character. From then on, there's an extensive festive programme, aimed at promoting the university and involving the city and the surrounding areas. Since then, each lustrum celebration ends with a big closing party, that is open to everyone.
This will be no different in 2014, as visitors will be treated to lots of activities. This year will also hallmark the return of the student masquerade, albeit with a modern twist.
