Italian to English: I compressori dinamici
General field: Tech/Engineering
Detailed field: Mechanics / Mech Engineering

General Comments
The dynamic compressor is probably the most rapidly developing compressor type. As users demand larger single unit installation for reasons of cost, high availability, and operating economy, the field for the dynamic unit is becoming broader. The rapidly extending pressure range for which these units are available, together with the development of smaller sizes, is making this unit useful in areas that formerly were best served by other designs.
The centrifugal compressor is the most prevalent design in this growth, although the axial-flow unit has not been far behind in the large capacity, moderate-pressure area.

Mechanical definitions
BASE PLATE is a metal structure on which the compressor and possibly the driver are mounted.
BOOSTER is a compressor operating with an elevated intake pressure. The term frequently connotes single stage, but this is not a necessary requirement.
CASING is the pressure-containing stationary element that encloses the rotor and associated internal components. It usually includes integral inlet and discharge connections (nozzles). Casing supports and means for lifting are provided.
DIAPHRAGM is a stationary element between stages of a multi stage centrifugal compressor. It may include guide vanes for directing gas to the impeller of the succeeding stage.
DIFFUSER is a stationary passageway following an impeller in which velocity energy imparted to the gas by the impeller is converted into static pressure.
DYNAMIC COMPRESSOR is any rotary continuous flow unit in which the mechanical action of rotating vanes or impellers imparts velocity and pressure to the flowing medium. The velocity energy is than converted in additional pressure. All dynamic units are known generally as compressors, whether centrifugal or axial.
EXAUSTER is a term sometimes applied to a dynamic compressor in which the inlet pressure is less than atmospheric.
GUIDE VANES are non-rotating elements that may be fixed or adjustable and provide a desired flow direction to the inlet of an impeller.
IMPELLER is that part of the rotating element that imparts momentum to the gas by aerodynamic forces. The impeller may be open, semi-closed or closed.
ROTOR is the rotating element composed of impeller(s) and shaft and may include shaft sleeves, rotating seal parts and thrust collars.
SEALS are devices used between rotating and stationary parts to minimize gas leakage between areas of unequal pressures.
SHAFT is that part of the rotating element on which the rotating parts are mounted and through which energy is transmitted from the prime mover.
SHAFT BEARINGS are lubricated stationary parts which support and radially locate the compressor shaft.
SHAFT SLEEVES are parts that may be used to position the impeller on the shaft and to protect the shaft.
THUST BEARING is a bearing that transmits the residual axial thrust of the rotor to the shaft bearing housing and maintains the axial position of the rotor.
VOLUTE is a stationary, spirally shaped passageway in the casing that collects the flow leaving an impeller and converts velocity energy into static pressure.
