Source text - English Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation.
On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. There are those of course who are happy to stand at the railings, even scan the horizon. Otherwise, choose your mast, find the ropes that suit you: sport, workaholism, celibacy with prayerbook and bell... But the kindest and toughest ropes of all are probably to be found in some suburban semi-detached with rowdy children and a woman who never allows the dust to settle for too long.

Source text - English All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

Quizá nada de esto tendría importancia si se estuviese obteniendo algo que mereciese la pena, si ese constante ajetreo y sonar de disparadores diera lugar al final a algo que no existía antes, imágenes que captasen belleza o que testimoniasen una realidad. Desgraciadamente, no es éste el caso. La cámara es simplemente una versión respetable del grafiti. Con ella estampamos nuestra huella en todo aquello que vemos, bajo el pretexto de estar dejando constancia de unas Maravillas del Mundo que ya han sido magníficamente plasmadas por profesionales y que se encuentran a la venta en cualquier librería de barrio o agencia de viajes. Pero claro, ¿de qué iba a servirnos a la vuelta mostrarle a la tía Juani unas postales de la campiña toscana si no figurásemos nosotros en la imagen para atestiguar que estuvimos allí?
Un saliente de piedras no es real, si no estoy yo en medio. Un monumento no existe, a no ser que ahí esté mi esposa, apoyada contra él. Un templo carece del más mínimo interés sin mi cara, con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja, al lado. Con mi cámara me apropio de todo lo bello, lo poseo, lo encojo, lo domestico y lo reproduzco sobre la desnuda pared de mi sala de estar para probar ante un selecto público compuesto por familiares y amigos lo único realmente transcendente acerca de estas maravillas: que yo las vi, estuve allí y las fotografié, luego existen.

Source text - Japanese F1というスポーツが、純粋なスポーツとしての大会からエンターテーメントになりつつある（すでになってしまった？）のは、オリンピックやサッカーといったスポーツイベントと同じ避けることのできない現象である。それによりF1というスポーツは世界のプロスポーツ選手の中で、年俸ランキングナンバーワンのレーサーを作り上げたし、テレビ放映権や巨大スポンサーの動かす額は想像を絶するほどである。PRや報道、出版といった周辺ビジネスも確立し、アメリカがこのスポーツに目をつけてからというもの、その恩恵を受けて喜んでいる関係者も確実に多いはずである。
Translation - Spanish Parece inevitable que, al igual que ha sucedido con el fútbol y los Juegos Olímpicos, la Fórmula 1 deje de ser una genuina competición deportiva para acabar convirtiéndose --si es que no lo ha hecho ya-- en un espectáculo. Como consecuencia de esto, la Fórmula 1 ha aupado a un piloto al primer puesto de la lista de los deportistas profesionales mejor pagados del mundo y las cantidades que se manejan por sus derechos televisivos y las aportaciones de los grandes patrocinadores son casi inconcebibles. Con la creación de negocios periféricos como publicidad, noticias y publicaciones, y con los EE. UU. con los ojos puestos en este deporte, es de esperar que mucha gente del mundo de la Fórmula 1 haya recibido todos estos beneficios con los brazos abiertos.
Sin embargo, ¿es realmente la Fórmula 1 un espectáculo como la industria cinematográfica? Ciertamente, los pilotos juegan un papel equivalente al que cumplen los actores en el mundo del cine, y los jefes de las escuderías al que desempeñan los directores de películas. Aquí también los espectadores compran entradas para poder asistir al evento. Así que llamarlo espectáculo o industria del entretenimiento quizá no sea ninguna exageración. Si bien es verdad que Hollywood ejerce una influencia enorme sobre la industria cinematográfica y que no se puede pasar por alto, ahí está también el cine europeo (o quizá habría que decir todo el cine menos el de Hollywood), con su, a veces casi exagerado, desprecio del comercialismo y crítica a la falta de calidad artística. De la misma forma que los cineastas europeos se aprovechan hábilmente de Hollywood, también la Fórmula 1, originaria de Europa, a la vez que saca tajada de los EE. UU., se empecina en guardar una cierta distancia y mantenerse en sus trece.
Alardean de que ésta tiene una historia y una categoría de la que los deportes de motor de EE. UU. y Japón, países convertidos en grandes imperios automovilísticos, carecen. También está el hecho de que, en la actualidad, los bólidos de Fórmula 1 producidos en estos dos países todavía no se pueden comparar ni remotamente con los europeos. Por lo que respecta a los ingenieros, que año tras año asisten desde fuera a este alboroto, y que sacan todo el partido de la más alta tecnología para apurar hasta la última centésima de segundo, la Fórmula 1 no es más que un lugar donde poner frente a frente sus creaciones. Para ellos, que compiten como si fueran niños para que su coche sea el más rápido, la recaudación y los derechos televisivos no tienen ninguna importancia. Aquí también se aprecia la diferencia entre los países que fabrican pensando en vender y los que lo hacen buscando crear algo de calidad.
