Great CAT tool with minimalist, highly functional UI and ability to work with gigantic TMs

Michael Beijer . Wow, I never thought I would write a positive review about an online CAT tool, and yet here I am doing exactly that. I've always been a staunch opponent of online CAT tools for a variety of reasons, and yet I have now been using the Memsource Desktop Editor for a few weeks for all my jobs and am really enjoying it.
One of the main things that attracted me initially was its amazing ability to easily work with gigantic translation memories (by ‘gigantic’, I mean connecting TMs, or collections of TMs, with around 40,000,000 segments or more). Where most other CAT tools seriously struggle with large TMs, I have somehow been able to connect extremely large TMs to my projects in Memsource with no noticeable slowdown or lag when moving from segment to segment. This is cool because, without any fiddling around with extra tricks or preparation, you can be sure to never miss a potential match you may have somewhere on your computer in the myriad translation memories an average translator builds up over the years.
Another advantage of being able to work with extremely large collections of TMs is that this makes concordance searching so much more useful. I used to have to use a separate program for this, either TMLookup or LogiTerm, but I can now dispense with these and do ALL my concordance searching directly in my CAT tool.
Another advantage of Memsource is that it has a good previewing system, which just works. Déjà Vu X3 and memoQ also have good previewing systems, but some CAT tools don't, and so having a preview which just works is nice. SDL Studio's preview system, e.g., is pretty much permanently broken, if you ask me.
I also very much like the minimalist UI, and particularly like it's layout. Many of you reading this will probably already know this, but the Memsource UI is pretty much a direct copy of the memoQ UI, which is a good thing iyam. I like the fact that all the hits are displayed in the same pane, and always like this about memoQ, which I used many years ago quite happily until it got larger and larger, and larger, and consequently more unresponsive.
Another positive point, when comparing Memsource to SDL Studio e.g., is that everything is just so much simpler. I absolutely hate how convoluted SDL Studio is, and everything is just so much simpler and better designed here.
Anyway, that's all I can think of now, but I can currently highly recommend Memsource.
One thing to note, however, is that I tried to use the Memsource online editor, but soon gave up because it is just too slow to work comfortably, which is a real shame. Moving from segment to segment can sometimes take much too long, but the worst is how long it takes to add terminology on the fly, all of which is pretty much instantaneous if you use the desktop version which I recommend.
I'll update this review in the future if I think of anything else relevant.

How easy is it to learn?

It is quite simple to use at a decent price.
Last week at a resort bar, its online interface and the final version Word download function took me only one hour for a quick translation of an article to send to my colleague.
Avoid. Relies too heavily on poor MT material and cuts the translator out of the loop

Matthew Schiantarelli . Memsource essentially turns you, the professional translator, into an MT editing robot.
When working with agencies using Memsource, the MT service used and the weighting assigned to how MT is billed depends entirely on the expertise of the project manager. In many cases this has meant completely retranslating thousands of words of incomprehensible gibberish generated by Google, which was then billed at a fraction of the effective value.
It saves the client money, but only by pretending that text translated from scratch by the translator was actually partially pretranslated.
Another issue is that Memsource is extremely slow with large projects, such as repetitive technical jobs with thousands of segments. In some cases, it takes up to 20 seconds to confirm one segment and move onto the next. Not ideal in a parts list...
Thirdly, Memsource doesn't let the translator use their own local memory. I have over 20 years' of material for certain sectors, and Memsource makes me research it all over again, because, once again, it treats the translator as nothing more than a drone.

How easy is it to learn?

Dénis Wettmann . I am an avid Mac user for the past decade and gotten used to hard- and software that just works. I never understood why I have to learn how to use a particular software. Software should just work and designed with an interface that can be naturally used, Memsource does just that.
The benefits:
You can feed it most files that are considered to be standard in the contemporary translator scene e.g. Trados, etc. There are also no issues maintaining the formatting when outputting the data again. You can sort all segments by various variables, and there is nothing more rewarding for me as a psychologist to see your continuous progress represented by statistics. Besides the obvious benefits that most CAT tools have, it also allows creating TM files for every translation, which results in higher quality translations by guaranteeing consistency.
The gritty bit:
It can slow down if you are working with files that exceed 2000 segments, presumably due to its cloud-based nature. There is a small monthly fee if you want to work on more than one project at the same time or collaborate.
I learned to love Memsource since I can use it from any of my Mac or iOS devices I have at hand. Overall, I can only wholeheartedly recommend the software.

Joe Zhou . I've been using Memsource since the year 2012 and the easy-to-use feature impressed me most.
Then it's convient for collaborative translation, esp. good in sharing TM and TB in real time. Related to this, it's easy to split and assign jobs to different translators, reviewers, etc. As a PM, you can know the progress of the jobs in real time.
Of course you can customize the work flow, and if necessary you can review the job while translating it, which will greatly reduce the turn around time.
Another advantage of Memsource is that it has both a web editor and a desktop editor, you can choose one according to the size of your files and the network conditions.
You can of course use MT engines and there is a good thing for MT output that it added the tags almost properly within the translation. MTPE mode is a new way of working which can improve the translation speed and efficiency.
Auto-email notifications in each step is certainly a great help. Don't worry that your mac os and even your tablet can use it, don't mention windows os, etc.
I highly recommend Memsource to you! You may find more cool features by yourself.
