come notato precedentemente, la situazione politica dell’isola influenza il regolamento del Dipartimento di Istruzione Pubblica. Porto Rico è una nazione di cultura ispanica dove si parla lo spagnolo senza alcun dialetto, nonostante il fatto che anche l’inglese è una lingua ufficiale. Lo spagnolo si usa nella vita quotidiana, a casa, per le strade, nei teatri, nelle gallerie pubbliche, nei mass media e nella società in generale.

the war in Ukraine or, more correctly, of the
Russian invasion of Ukraine, launched on
February 24 by President Vladimir Putin. We are
all shocked and saddened by the events and by
the human suffering they are causing. And as we
speak, really, a Russian military convoy is headed
towards Kyiv, other Ukrainian cities are being
bombarded, half a million Ukrainians have
already fled to neighboring countries and much
more. It's still early days, and it's difficult to
predict how the situation will evolve even just in
the next few hours. But this is a war that should
concern everyone, everywhere. And so today, in
this TED Membership conversation, we want to
try to give it a broader context with our guest,
historian and author, Yuval Noah Harari. Yuval,
welcome. Yuval Noah Harari: Hello. Thank you for
inviting me. BG: I want to start from Ukraine itself
and its 42 million people and its particular place
between the East and the West. What do we
need to know about Ukraine to understand this
war and what's at stake? YNH: The most crucial
thing to know is that Ukrainians are not Russians,
and that Ukraine is an ancient, independent
nation. Ukraine has a history of more than a
thousand years. Kyiv was a major metropolis and
cultural center when Moscow was not even a
village. For most of these thousand years Kyiv
was not ruled by Moscow. They were not part of
the same political entity. For centuries, Kyiv was
looking westwards and was a part of a union with
Lithuania and Poland until it was eventually
conquered and absorbed by the Russian Empire,
by the czarist empire.

lontana, sopra le nostre teste, di cui non
possiamo fare granché, una questione solo
tecnica o scientifica. La crisi climatica è una
questione profondamente umana che riguarda
davvero il nostro quotidiano, è una questione di
giustizia sociale ed è anche una questione di
genere. E per raccontarvi questa faccia della crisi
climatica, stasera vorrei partire dalla storia di
Marta. Marta, a nove anni, è la sindaca più
giovane d'Italia. Perché Marta è di Brindisi: e
Brindisi, come tante città, ha instaurato il
consiglio dei ragazzi delle ragazze, un vero e
proprio consiglio comunale che interagisce con il
sindaco vero e proprio, i cui rappresentanti, le cui
piccole sindache e i sindaci sono eletti tra le file
delle scuole e delle classi della città. E Marta si è
candidata con un programma che puntava ad
avere più verde e più parchi per i suoi coetanei,
più aria pulita, meno rifiuti per le strade. Secondo
una bellissima intervista che ha rilasciato qualche
mese fa ha vinto proprio per questo, perché,
come diremmo noi adulti, si è candidata con una
"piattaforma ambientalista"; e come dice lei, ha
vinto perché è "una bambina piccola che pensa in
grande". Ed effettivamente da persona che ha
vissuto, respirato, studiato, lavorato nelle città e
per le città, che ho fatto delle città la mia
ossessione professionale, vi posso dire che
guardare le città, e quindi guardare il mondo con
gli occhi di Marta, Marta oggi bambina ma, un
giorno, Marta ragazza e Marta donna, è forse
l'unico modo che noi abbiamo per salvare il
pianeta, e quindi per salvare noi stessi. Perché?
Perché la crisi climatica, appunto, non è
socialmente ed economicamente neutra: la crisi
climatica è profondamente ingiusta. Rende le
persone più povere ancora più povere; rende le
persone diseguali ancora più diseguali; accelera
ed esacerba le discriminazioni là dove esistono
già. E infatti le donne, le "Marte", le mamme di
Marta di questo mondo, sono tra le persone più
colpite dalla crisi climatica. L'80% delle persone
che oggi si spostano a causa di siccità o
inondazioni sono donne. I

científico. La crisis climática es un asunto

realmente nuestra cotidianidad, es un asunto de
justicia social y también un problema de género.
Y para contarles este lado de la crisis climática
esta noche quisiera empezar con la historia de
Marta. Marta, con nueve años es la alcaldesa más
joven de Italia. Porque Marta es de Bríndisi: y
Bríndisi, como tantas ciudades ha fundado un
consejo de chicos y chicas, un verdadero consejo
comunal que interactúa con el alcalde en
persona, donde sus representantes, los pequeños
alcaldes y alcaldesas son elegidos en las escuelas
y las clases de la ciudad. Y Marta se postuló con
un programa que aspiraba a aumentar las áreas
verdes y parques para sus coetáneos, aumentar
el aire limpio y disminuir la basura en las calles.
Según cuenta en una entrevista que hizo hace
algunos meses ganó por eso mismo, porque
como diríamos nosotros los adultos, se postuló
con una “plataforma ambientalista”; y como dice
ella, ganó porque es “una niña pequeña que
piensa en grande”. Y efectivamente hablando
como una persona que ha vivido, respirado,
trabajado en la ciudad y para la ciudad, y que la
ciudad se convirtió en mi obsesión profesional,
les puedo decir que ver la ciudad, por lo tanto ver
el mundo con los ojos de Marta; ahora Marta es
una niña, pero un día, Marta adolescente y Marta
mujer, quizás será la única forma que tendremos
para salvar el planeta, por consiguiente para
salvarnos a nosotros mismos. ¿Por qué? Porqué
la crisis climática, precisamente, no es neutral, ni
socialmente ni económicamente: la crisis
climática es profundamente injusta. Hace que las
personas pobres sean todavía más pobres; hace
que las personas desiguales sean todavía más
desiguales; acelera y agrava la discriminación en
lugares donde ya existe. De hecho las mujeres,
las “Martas”, las madres de Marta en este
mundo, están entre las personas más afectadas
por la crisis climática. El 80 % de las personas que
se mudan a causa de sequías o inundaciones son
mujeres.
English to Spanish: Love letters to book General field: Art/Literary
Source text - English I love books. I love their smell. I love to have four to five on my bedside, so when I can't sleep, I read. I love going to bookstores where there are hundreds of books on the shelves. Books are amazing. You can read them while walking, laying down, or sitting. You can go back to a page easily just by remembering the page number. Kindles don't do that well. For the past three years, we've been really evolving away from books. Did you know that 40 million adults in the US have low reading skills, and that 30% didn't read a book in 2018? It's obvious that book reading is decreasing. It's difficult and painful to think that one day, books will disappear, but it seems to be the sad truth. We're advancing the technology so fast that it's obvious they'll be replaced with technology even more distracting than phones, video games and things like that. And that makes me sad. Let's take an example, like the Bible. It's the best-selling book of all time. More than 4 billion copies sold in the last 50 years. And then what? We just throw it away? Do we forget about all the books we love? Do we forget about all the books we read as kids? No, I don't think so. The first printed book was created in 868 AD, and since then, I don't think there has been an invention better than them. Same thing for arts. Think about the famous Mona Lisa from Leonardo da Vinci. Would you prefer to look at it as a lifeless phone background? Or actually, see it, feel the lightful atmosphere in the famous French museum, the Louvre? The future generation should teach their kids that even if they have phones, they should read, even if it's only 10 to 20 minutes a day. They'll learn to love books and will teach their kids, who will teach their kids, and we might succeed, and books will stay alive. I know technologies can be really exciting, even for bibliophiles. For example, there are some really smart AIs that can read an author's book really fast, and when asked the AI any subject, it'll tell you about it as the author would tell it, and in a written voice similar to the author's. It can also mimic a famous author's voice fairly well, and is getting more consistent with their estimations. I'm not sure if you understand how outstanding the AI algorithms are. Now, I wouldn't say AIs are bad, however, what if one day, they will take authors' jobs, and authors won't exist anymore? Have you thought about that? Well, I have, and I think we should do something about that too. So what can we do to save books from extinction? I believe the new generation might save them. I believe they'll not be as attached to their phones as millennials. This is why I think this. In my class, more than three fourths love reading, and the rest don't hate, but they just don't read a lot. My generation had much less access to iPads than kids born after 2009, the introduction of the iPad. We had Kindles and books, and the majority of my class read books, not Kindles. We should not stop reading books. I'm sure you once had a toy or something that you really loved, and one day you just stopped playing with it, and now you're telling yourself, "I wish I still had that thing." It's going to be the same thing for books if we also stop reading them. They will be no longer written and published. And I am here to say for posterity that I will miss their smell and the weight of a 200-page paperback and the feel of a library filled with fascinating books. Thank you. (Applause)

Me encanta ir a librerías donde hay miles de libros en los estantes. Los libros son increíbles. Puedes leerlos mientras caminas, acostado, o sentado. Puedes volver a una página tan solo recordando el número. No puedes hacer eso con los Kindles. En los útlimos tres años nos hemos alejado de los libros. ¿Sabían que 40 millones de adultos en EE. UU. tienen un bajo nivel de lectura? ¿Y que un 30 % no leyó ni un libro en el 2018? Es innegable que la lectura de libros está bajando. Es difícil y doloroso pensar que los libros desaparecerán en algún momento, pero es la triste realidad. La tecnología está avanzando tan rápido que es obvio que serán reemplazados por la tecnología que distrae mucho más que los teléfonos, video juegos y cosas así. Eso me entristece. Pongamos como ejemplo, la Biblia. Es el libro más vendido de todos los tiempos. Más de 4000 millones de copias vendidas en los últimos 50 años. ¿y luego qué? ¿Lo botamos a la basura? ¿Nos olvidamos de los libros que amamos? ¿De los libros que leímos de niños? No, no creo. El primer libro impreso fue creado en 868 a.C., desde ese entonces, no creo que exista una mejor invención. Lo mismo que las artes. Piensen en la famosa Mona Lisa de Leonardo da Vinci. ¿Prefieres verla como un un fondo sin vida del móvil? ¿O verla, realmente, sentir la atmosfera luminosa en el famoso museo francés, el Louvre? La futura generación debería enseñar a sus hijos que aunque tengan móviles, deben leer, aunque solo 10 o 20 minutos al día. Así aprenderán a amar los libros y enseñaran a sus hijos, que a su vez enseñaran a sus hijos, y quizás podamos tener éxito, y los libros sobrevivirán. Se que las tecnologías puede ser muy fascinantes, hasta para los bibliófilos. Por ejemplo, hay algunas IA muy inteligentes que pueden leer libros muy rápido, Y si le preguntas a la IA sobre cualquier tema, te habla sobre este como si te lo dijera el mismo autor, y con una voz narradora parecida a la del autor. También puede imitar bastante bien las voces narradoras del autor, y se está volviendo más consistente con sus estimaciones. No se si entienden cuan extraordinarios son los algoritmos de las IA. Ahora, no diré que las IA son malas, sin embargo, ¿que pasaría si un día, toman el trabajo de los escritores, y los escritores dejan de existir? ¿Han pensado en eso? Bueno, yo sí, y creo que deberíamos hacer algo sobre eso también. ¿Entonces que podemos hacer para salvar los libros de la extinción? Creo que la nueva generación los puede salvar.
