The Other Renaissance
Art history's conception of the Renaissance as an historically, geographically, and culturally unique period is based on the lives and achievements of men. The history of women's contributions to visual culture does not necessarily fit neatly into categories produced by and around men's activities, and accepting the concept of the Renaissance as a frame carries with it inherent risks for a feminist history. There is, on the one hand, a danger of rewriting women's production in ways that "fit them into" preexisting categories; and on the other, the risk of trivializing women's achievements by seeing them through the lens of sexual difference. Women artists such as Properza de' Rossi, Lavinia Fontana, Elisabetta Sirani, Diana Mantuana (also called Diana Scultori), and Artemisia Gentileschi achieved a remarkable degree of public visibility and renown during their lifetimes. Their achievements were cited as evidence of what a woman could do, but male writers often followed Boccaccio's example and asserted that famous women were miraculously endowed with the qualities that enabled them to succeed and thus could not serve as models for ordinary women.
Without exception, the artists mentioned above are identified with the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries rather than the fifteenth. And with the exception of Anguissola (discussed in the previous chapter) and Gentileschi—whose fortunes are identified with Rome, Naples, and Florence in the seventeenth century—all were part of the intellectual and artistic flowering that took place in Bologna, a city geographically displaced from the centers of early Renaissance culture. Our knowledge of their careers is far from complete, and although they are but a few of the many names scattered through the literature of this period, their achievements deserve serious study.
Bologna was unique among Italian cities for having both a university which had educated women since the Middle Ages and a female saint who painted. By the fifteenth century the organization of the guilds under the spiritual protection of specific saints had established St. Luke, who was believed to have painted miracle-working icons including one of the Virgin Mary, as the patron saint of painters. Painters in Bologna, where the guilds remained powerful long after they had lost political and economic effectiveness in the rest of Italy, had their own saint.
Caterina dei Vigri (St. Catherine of Bologna, canonized 1707), whose cult flourished in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, is another example of the transmission of learning and culture by women in convents. Born into a noble Bolognese family in 141 3 and educated at the court of Ferrara, she entered the Convent of the Poor Clares there after her father's death in 1427. She was known for her Latin and skill in music, painting, and illumination. Elected abbess soon after the Poor Clares moved to Bologna in 1456, her reputation as a painter grew swiftly. According to accounts by her friend and biographer, Sister Illuminata Bembo, she "loved to paint the Divine Word as a babe in swaddling bands, and for many monasteries in Ferrara and for books she painted him thus in miniature." The best known of her writings, The Seven Weapons, recounts the spiritual battles of a religious woman who saw her intellect and will in conflict with the submission and obedience demanded by the Church.
Although references to Caterina dei Vigri's painting enter the literature in the sixteenth century, attempts by feminist scholars to assemble an oeuvre for her have proved disappointing. The small group of works preserved in the Convent Church, the Corpus Domini of the Order of Santa Caterina dei Vigri in Bologna, show a naive and untrained hand, or hands, at work. X-rays taken in 1941 of the most famous of her paintings, a St. Ursula now in Venice, reveal an indecipherable inscription underneath her signature. Nevertheless, although we know all too little about her achievements, the significance of a woman painter, saint, and patron of painters to sixteenth-century Bologna, whose civic pride and ecclesiastical authority then reached new heights, should not be underestimated.

La concezione della storia dell'arte del Rinascimento come un periodo storicamente, geograficamente e culturalmente unico si basa sulle vite e sui successi degli uomini. La storia dei contributi femminili alla cultura figurativa non si adatta necessariamente bene alle categorie prodotte da e intorno alle attività degli uomini, e accettare il concetto del Rinascimento come cornice comporta rischi intrinseci per una storia femminista. C’è da un lato, il rischio di riscrivere la produzione femminile in modi che “forzino” le donne entro categorie preesistenti e dall'altro il rischio di banalizzare i successi femminili osservandoli attraverso la lente della diversità sessuale. Artiste come Properzia de' Rossi, Lavinia Fontana, Elisabetta Sirani, Diana Mantuana (detta anche Diana Scultori) e Artemisia Gentileschi raggiunsero un notevole grado di visibilità pubblica e fama durante la loro vita. I loro successi furono citati a riprova di ciò che una donna potrebbe fare, ma gli scrittori maschi seguirono spesso l'esempio di Boccaccio e sostennero che che le donne famose fossero miracolosamente dotate delle qualità necessarie per avere successo e quindi non potessero servire da modelli per le donne comuni.
Senza eccezioni, le artiste sopra citate sono identificate con il Cinquecento ed il Seicento piuttosto che con il Quattrocento. E con l'eccezione di Anguissola (discussa nel capitolo precedente) e di Gentileschi - le cui fortune si identificarono con Roma, Napoli e Firenze nel 1600 - facevano tutte parte della fioritura intellettuale e artistica avvenuta a Bologna, città geograficamente lontana dai centri della cultura del primo Rinascimento. La nostra conoscenza delle loro carriere è lungi dall'essere completa e, sebbene siano solo alcuni dei tanti nomi sparsi nella letteratura di questo periodo, i loro successi meritano una seria ricerca.
Bologna era l’unica tra le città italiane ad avere sia un'università che istruiva donne sin dal Medioevo, sia una santa che dipingeva. Nel ‘400 l'organizzazione delle corporazioni sotto la protezione spirituale di specifici santi aveva adottato San Luca, che si credeva aver dipinto icone miracolose tra cui una della Vergine Maria, come santo patrono dei pittori. I pittori di Bologna, dove le corporazioni rimasero influenti molto tempo dopo aver perso forza politica ed economica nel resto d'Italia, avevano la loro santa.
Caterina dei Vigri (Santa Caterina da Bologna, canonizzata nel 1707), il cui culto fiorì nel ‘500 e nel '600, è un altro esempio della trasmissione del sapere e della cultura da parte delle donne nei conventi. Nata in una nobile famiglia bolognese nel 1413 ed educata alla corte di Ferrara, entrò nel ferrarese Convento delle Clarisse dopo la morte del padre nel 1427. Era nota per il suo latino e le sue abilità nella musica, nella pittura e nell’arte della miniatura. Eletta badessa subito dopo il trasferimento delle Clarisse a Bologna nel 1456, la sua fama di pittrice crebbe rapidamente. Secondo i resoconti della sua amica e biografa, suor Illuminata Bembo, Caterina "amava dipingere il Verbo Divino come un bambino in fasce, e per i molti monasteri di Ferrara e i molti libri lo miniava così". Il piccolo gruppo di lavori conservati nella Chiesa del Convento, la Chiesa del Corpus Domini dell'Ordine di Santa Caterina dei Vigri a Bologna, mostra il lavoro di una mano, o mani, ingenue ed inesperte. Le radiografie scattate nel 1941 del più famoso dei suoi dipinti, una Sant’Orsola oggi a Venezia, rivelano un'iscrizione indecifrabile sotto la sua firma. Tuttavia, sebbene sappiamo fin troppo poco dei suoi successi, non deve esser sottovalutata la rilevanza di una pittrice, santa e protettrice dei pittori per la Bologna del Cinquecento secolo, il cui orgoglio civico e autorità ecclesiastica raggiunsero allora nuove vette.
