GREAT
DEMOTIONS

At this assertion our two travelers let themselves fall against each other, seized with a fit of . . . inextinguishable laughter.

In the seventeenth century there was still some hope that, even if the Earth was not the center of the Universe, it might be the only "world." But Galileo's telescope revealed that "the Moon certainly does not possess a smooth and polished surface" and that other worlds might look "just like the face of the Earth itself." The Moon and the planets showed unmistakably that they had as much claim to being worlds as the Earth does—with mountains, craters, atmospheres, polar ice caps, clouds, and, in the case of Saturn, a dazzling, unheard-of set of circumferential rings. After millennia of philosophical debate, the issue was settled decisively in favor of "the plurality of worlds." They might be profoundly different from our planet. None of them might be as congenial for life. But the Earth was hardly the only one.
This was the next in the series of Great Demotions, downlifting experiences, demonstrations of our apparent insignificance, wounds that science has, in its search for Galileo's facts, delivered to human pride.
WELL, SOME HOPED, even if the Earth isn't at the center of the Universe, the Sun is. The Sun is our Sun. So the Earth is approximately at the center of the Universe. Perhaps some of our pride could in this way be salvaged. But by the nineteenth century, observational astronomy had made it clear that the Sun is but one lonely star in a great self-gravitating assemblage of suns called the Milky Way Galaxy. Far from being at the center of the Galaxy, our Sun with its entourage of dim and tiny planets lies in an undistinguished sector of an obscure spiral arm. We are thirty thousand light years from the Center.
Well, our Milky Way is the only galaxy. The Milky Way Galaxy is one of billions, perhaps hundreds of billions of galaxies notable neither in mass nor in brightness nor in how its stars are configured and arrayed. Some modern deep sky photographs show more galaxies beyond the Milky Way than stars within the Milky Way. Every one of them is an island universe containing perhaps a hundred billion suns. Such an image is a profound sermon on humility.
Well, then, at least our Galaxy is at the center of the Universe. No, this is wrong too. When the expansion of the Universe was first discovered, many people naturally gravitated to the notion that the Milky Way was at the center of the expansion, and all the other galaxies running away from us. We now recognize that astronomers on any galaxy would see all the others running away . from them; unless they were very careful, they would all conclude that they were at the center of the Universe. There is, in fact, no center to the expansion, no point of origin of the Big Bang, at least not in ordinary three-dimensional space.
Well, even if there are hundreds of billions of galaxies, each with hundreds of billions of stars, no other star has planets. If there are no other planets beyond our Solar System, perhaps there's no other life in the Universe. Our uniqueness might then be saved. Sing planets are small and feebly shine by reflected sunlight, they're hard to find. Although applicable technology is improving wit breathtaking speed, even a giant world like Jupiter, orbiting the nearest star, Alpha Centauri, would still be difficult to detect. Iii our ignorance, the geocentrists find hope.
There was once a scientific hypothesis—not just well received but prevailing—that supposed our solar system to have formed through the near collision of the ancient Sun with another star; the gravitational tidal interaction pulled out tendrils of sunstuff that quickly condensed into planets. Since space is mainly empty and near stellar collisions most rare, it was concluded that few other planetary systems exist—perhaps only one, around that other star that long ago co-parented the worlds of our solar system. Early in my studies, I was amazed and disappointed that such a view had ever been taken seriously, that for planets of other stars, absence of evidence had been considered evidence of absence.
Today we have firm evidence for at least three planets orbiting an extremely dense star, the pulsar designated B1257+12, about which I'll say more later. And we've found, for more than half the stars with masses like the Sun's, that early in their careers they're surrounded by great disks of gas aid dust out of which planets seem to form. Other planetary systems now look to be a cosmic commonplace, maybe even worlds something like the Earth. We should be able, in the next few decades, to inventory at least the larger planets, if they exist, of hundreds of nearby stars.
Well, if our position in space doesn't reveal our special role, our position in time does: We've been in the Universe since The Beginning (give or take a few days). We've been given special responsibilities by the Creator. It once seemed very reasonable to think of the Universe as beginning just a little before our collective memory is obscured by the passage of time and the illiteracy of our ancestors. Generally speaking, that's hundreds or thousands of years ago. Religions that purport to describe the origin of the Universe often specify—implicitly or explicitly—a date of origin of roughly such vintage, a birthday for the world.
If you add up all the "begats" in Genesis, for example, you get an age for the Earth: 6,000 years old, plus or minus a little. The universe is said to be exactly as old as the Earth. This is still the standard of Jewish, Christian, and Moslem fundamentalists and is clearly reflected in the Jewish calendar.
But so young a Universe raises an awkward question: How is it that there are astronomical objects more than 6,000 light-years away? It takes light a year to travel a light-year, 10,000 years to travel 10,000 light-years, and so on. When we look at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, the light we see left its source 30,000 years ago. The nearest spiral galaxy like our own, M31 in the constellation Andromeda, is 2 million light-years away, so we are seeing it as it was when the light from it set out on its long journey to Earth—2 million years ago. And when we observe distant quasars 5 billion light-years away, we are seeing them as they were 5 billion years ago, before the Earth was formed. (They are, almost certainly, very different today.)
If, despite this, we were to accept the literal truth of such religious books, how could we reconcile the data? The only plausible conclusion, I think, is that God recently made all the photons of light arriving on the Earth in such a coherent format as to mislead generations of astronomers into the misapprehension that there are such things as galaxies and quasars, and intentionally driving them to the spurious conclusion that the Universe is vast and old. This is such a malevolent theology I still have difficulty believing that anyone, no matter how devoted to the divine inspiration of any religious book, could seriously entertain it.
Beyond this, the radioactive dating of rocks, the abundance of impact craters on many worlds, the evolution of the stars, and the expansion of the Universe each provides compelling and independent evidence that our Universe is many billions of years old—despite the confident assertions of revered theologians that a world so old directly contradicts the word of God, and that at any rate information on the antiquity of the world is inaccessible except to faith.1 These lines of evidence, as well, would have to be manufactured by a deceptive and malicious deity—unless the world is much older than the literalists in the Judeo-Christian-Islamic religion suppose. Of course, no such problem arises for those many religious people who treat the Bible and the Qur'an as historical and moral guides and great literature, but who recognize that the perspective of these scriptures on the natural world reflects the rudimentary science of the time in which they were written.
Ages rolled by before the Earth began. More ages will run their course before it is destroyed. A distinction needs to be drawn between how old the Earth is (around 4.5 billion years) and how old the Universe is (about 15 billion years since the Big Bang). The immense interval of time between the origin of the Universe and our epoch was two-thirds over before the Earth came to be. Some stars and planetary systems are billions of years younger, others billions of years older. But in Genesis, chapter 1, verse 1, the Universe and the Earth are created on the same day. The Hindu-Buddhist-Jain religion tends not to confound the two events.
As for humans, we're latecomers. We appear in the last instant of cosmic time. The history of the Universe till now was 99.998 percent over before our species arrived on the scene. In that vast sweep of aeons, we could not have assumed any special responsibilities for our planet, or life, or anything else. We were not here.
Well, if we can't find anything special about our position or our epoch, maybe there's something special about our motion. Newton and all the other great classical physicists held that the velocity of the Earth in space constituted a "privileged frame of reference." That's actually what it was called. Albert Einstein, a keen critic of prejudice and privilege all his life, considered this "absolute" physics a remnant of an increasingly discredited Earth chauvinism. It seemed to him that the laws of Nature must be the same no matter what the velocity or frame of reference of the observer. With this as his starting point, he developed the Special Theory of Relativity. Its consequences are bizarre, counter intuitive, and grossly contradict common sense—but only at very high speeds. Careful and repeated observations show that his justly celebrated theory is an accurate description of how the world is made. Our commonsense intuitions can be mistaken. Our preferences don't count. We do not live in a privileged reference frame.
One consequence of special relativity is time dilation—the slowing down of time as the observer approaches light speed. You can still find claims that time dilation applies to watches and elementary particles—and, presumably, to circadian and other rhythms in plants, animals, and microbes—but not to human biological clocks. Our species has been granted, it is suggested, special immunity from the laws of Nature, which must accordingly be able to distinguish deserving from undeserving collections of matter. (In fact, the proof Einstein gave for special, relativity admits no such distinctions.) The idea of humans as exceptions to relativity seems another incarnation of the notion of special creation:
Well, even if our position, our epoch, our motion, and our world are not unique, maybe we are. We're different from the other animals. We're specially created. The particular devotion of the Creator of the Universe is evident in us. This position was passionately defended on religious and other grounds. But in the middle nineteenth century Charles Darwin showed convincingly how one species can evolve into another by entirely natural processes, which come down to the heartless business of Nature saving the heredities that work and rejecting those that don't. "Man in his arrogance thinks himself a great work worthy [of] the interposition of a deity," Darwin wrote telegraphically in his notebook. "More humble and I think truer to consider him created from animals." The profound and intimate connections of humans with the other life forms, on Earth have been compellingly demonstrated in the late twentieth century by the new science of molecular biology.
IN EACH AGE the self-congratulatory chauvinisms are challenged in yet another arena of scientific debate—in this century, for example, in attempts to understand the nature of human sexuality, the existence of the unconscious mind, and the fact that many psychiatric illnesses and character "defects" have a molecular origin. But also:
Well, even if we're closely related to some of the other animals, we're different—not just in degree, but in kind—on what really matters: reasoning, selfconsciousness, tool making, ethics, altruism, religion, language, nobility of character. While humans, like all animals, have traits that set them apart—otherwise, how could we distinguish one species from another?—human uniqueness has been exaggerated, sometimes grossly so. Chimps reason, are self-conscious, make tools, show devotion, and so on. Chimps and humans have 99.6 percent of their active genes in common. (Ann Druyan and I run through the evidence in our book Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors.)
In popular culture, the very opposite position is also embraced, although it too is driven by human chauvinism (plus a failure of the imagination): Children's stories and cartoons make animals dress in clothes, live in houses, use knives and forks, and speak. The three bears sleep in beds. The owl and the pussycat go to sea in a beautiful pea-green boat. Dinosaur mothers cuddle their young. Pelicans deliver the mail. Dogs drive cars. A worm catches a thief. Pets have human names. Dolls, nutcrackers, cups, and saucers dance and have opinions. The dish runs away with the spoon. In the Thomas the Tank Engine series, we even have anthropomorphic locomotives and railway cars, charmingly portrayed. No matter what we're thinking about, animate or inanimate, we tend to invest it with human traits. We can't help ourselves. The images come readily to mind. Children are clearly fond of them.
When we talk about a "threatening" sky, a "troubled" sea diamonds "resisting" being scratched, the Earth "attracting" passing asteroid, or an atom being "excited," we are again drawn to a kind of animist worldview. We reify. Some ancient level of our thinking endows inanimate Nature with life, passions, and forethought.
The notion that the Earth is self-aware has lately been growing at the fringes of the "Gaia" hypothesis. But this was commonplace belief of both the ancient Greeks and the earl Christians. Origen wondered whether "the earth also, according to its own nature, is accountable for some sin." A host of ancient scholars thought the stars alive. This was also the position of Origen, of St. Ambrose (the mentor of St. Augustine), and even, in a more qualified form, of St. Thomas Aquinas. The Stoic philosophical position on the Sun's nature was stated by Cicero, in the first century B.C.: "Since the Sun resembles those fires which are contained in the bodies of living creatures, the Sun must also be alive."
Animist attitudes in general seem to have been spreading recently. In a 1954 American survey, 75 percent of people polled were willing to state that the Sun is not alive; in 1989, only 30 percent would support so rash a proposition. On whether an automobile tire can feel anything, 90 percent of respondents denied it emotions in 1954, but only 73 percent in 1989.
We can recognize here a shortcoming—in some circumstances serious—in our ability to understand the world. Characteristically, willy-nilly, we seem compelled to project our own nature onto Nature. Although this may result in a consistently distorted view of the world, it does have one great virtue—projection is the essential precondition for compassion.
Okay, maybe we're not much, maybe we're humiliatingly related t0 apes, but at least we're the best there is. God and angels aside, we're the only intelligent beings in the Universe. One correspondent writes to me, "I am as sure of this as anything in my experience. There is no conscious life anywhere else in the Universe. Mankind thus returns to its rightful position as center of the universe." However, partly through the influence of science acid science fiction, most people today, in the United States at least, reject this proposition—for reasons essentially stated by the ancient Greek philosopher Chrysippus: "For any human being in existence to think that there is nothing in the whole world superior to himself would be an insane piece of arrogance."
But the simple fact is that we have not yet found extraterrestrial life. We are in the earliest stages of looking. The question is wide open. If I had to guess—especially considering our long sequence of failed I would guess that the Universe is filled with beings far more intelligent, tar more advanced than we are. But of course I might be wrong. Such a conclusion is at best based on a plausibility argument, derived from the numbers of planets, the ubiquity of organic matter, the immense timescales available for evolution, and so on. It is not a scientific demonstration. The question is among the most fascinating in all of science. As described in this book, we are just developing the tools to treat it seriously.
What about the related matter of whether we are capable of creating intelligences smarter than ourselves? Computers routinely do mathematics that no unaided human can manage, outperform world champions in checkers and grand masters in chess, speak and understand English and other languages, write presentable short stories and musical compositions, learn from their mistakes, and competently pilot ships, airplanes, and spacecraft. Their abilities steadily improve. They're getting smaller, faster, and cheaper. Each year, the tide of scientific advance laps a little further ashore on the island of human intellectual uniqueness with its embattled castaways. If, at so early a stage in our technological evolution, we have been able to go so far in creating intelligence out of silicon and metal, what will be possible in the following decades and centuries? What happens when smart machines are able to manufacture smarter machines?
PERHAPS THE CLEAREST INDICATION that the search for an unmerited privileged position for humans will never be wholly abandoned is what in physics and astronomy is called the Anthropic Principle. It would be better named the Anthropocentric Principle. It comes in various forms. The "Weak" Anthropic Principle merely notes that if the laws of Nature and the physical constants—such as the speed of light, the electrical charge of the electron, the Newtonian gravitational constant, or Planck's quantum mechanical constant had been different, the course of events leading to the origin of humans would never have transpired. Under other laws and constants, atoms would not hold together, stars would evolve too quickly to leave sufficient time for life to evolve on nearby planets, the chemical elements of which life is made would never have been generated, and so on. Different laws, no humans.
There is no controversy about the Weak Anthropic Principle: Change the laws and constants of Nature, if you could, and a very different universe may emerge—in many cases, a universe incompatible with life.2 The mere fact that we exist implies (but does not impose) constraints on the laws of Nature. In contrast, the various "Strong" Anthropic Principles go much farther; some of their advocates come close to deducing that the laws of Nature and the values of the physical constants were established (don't ask how or by Whom) so that humans would eventually come to be. Almost all of the other possible universes, they say, are inhospitable. In this way, the ancient conceit that the Universe was made for us is resuscitated.
To me it echoes Dr. Pangloss in Voltaire's Candide, convinced that this world, with all its imperfections, is the best possible. It sounds like playing my first hand of bridge, winning, knowing that there are 54 billion billion billion (5.4 X 1028) possible other hands that I was equally likely to have been dealt . . . and then foolishly concluding that a god of bridge exists and favors me, a god who arranged the cards and the shuffle with my victory foreordained from The Beginning. We do not know how many other winning hands there are in the cosmic deck, how many other kinds of universes, laws of Nature, and physical constants: that could also lead to life and Intelligence and perhaps even delusions of self-importance. Since we know next to nothing about how the Universe was made—or even if it was made—it's difficult to pursue these notions productively.
Voltaire asked "Why is there anything?" Einstein's formulation was to ask whether God had any choice in creating the Universe. But if the Universe is infinitely old—if the Big Bang some 15 billion years ago is only the most recent cusp in an infinite series of cosmic contractions and expansions—then it was never created and the question of why it is as it is is rendered meaningless.
If, on the other hand, the Universe has a finite age, why is it the way it is? Why wasn't it given a very different character? Which laws of Nature go with which others? Are there meta-laws specifying the connections? Can we possibly discover them? Of all conceivable laws of gravity, say, which ones can exist simultaneously with which conceivable laws of quantum physics that determine the very existence of macroscopic matter? Are all laws we can think of possible, or is there only a restricted number that can somehow be brought into existence? Clearly we have not a glimmering of how to determine which laws of Nature are "possible" and which are not. Nor do we have more than the most rudimentary notion of what correlations of natural laws are "permitted."
For example, Newton's universal law of gravitation specifies that the mutual gravitational force attracting two bodies towards each other is inversely proportional to the square of how far they are apart. You move twice as far from the center of the Earth and you weigh a quarter as much; ten times farther and you weigh only a hundredth of your ordinary weight; etc. It is this inverse square law that permits the exquisite circular and elliptical orbits of planets around the Sun, and moons around the planets—as well as the precision trajectories of our interplanetary spacecraft. If r is the distance between the centers of two masses, we say that the gravitational force varies as 1/r2.
But if this exponent were different—if the gravitational law were 1/r4, say, rather than 1/r2 —then the orbits would not close; over billions of revolutions, the planets would spiral in and be consumed in the fiery depths of the Sun, or spiral out and be lost to interstellar space. If the Universe were constructed with an inverse fourth power law rather than an inverse square law, soon there would be no planets for living beings to inhabit.
So of all the possible gravitational force laws, why are we so lucky as to live in a universe sporting a law consistent with life? First of course, we're so "lucky," because if we weren't, we wouldn't be here to ask the question. It is no mystery that inquisitive beings who evolve on planets can be found only in universes that admit planets. Second, the inverse square law is not is the only one consistent with stability over billions of years. Any power law less steep than 1/r3 (1/r2.99 or 1/r, for example) will keep a planet in the vicinity of a circular orbit even if it's given a shove. We have a tendency to overlook the possibility that other conceivable laws of Nature might also be consistent with life.
But there's a further point: It's not arbitrary that we have an inverse square law of gravitation. When Newton's theory is understood in terms of the more encompassing general theory of relativity, we recognize that the exponent of the gravity law is 2 because the number of physical dimensions we live in is 3. All gravity laws aren't available, free for a Creator's choosing. Even given an infinite number of three-dimensional universes for some great god to tinker with, the gravity law would always lave to be the law of the inverse square. Newtonian gravity, we might say, is not a contingent facet of our universe, but a necessary one.
In general relativity, gravity is due to the dimensionality and curvature of space. When we talk about gravity we are talking about local dimples in space-time. This is by no means obvious and even affronts commonsense notions. But when examined deeply, the ideas of gravity and mass are not separate matters, but ramifications of the underlying geometry of space-time.
I wonder if something like this doesn't apply generally to all anthropic hypotheses. The laws or physical constants on which our lives depend turn out to be members of a class, perhaps even a vast class, of other laws and other physical constants—but some of these are also compatible with a kind of life. Often we do not (or cannot) work through what those other universes allow. Beyond that, not every arbitrary choice of a law of Nature or a physical constant may be available, even to a maker of universes. Our understanding of which laws of Nature and which physical constants are up for grabs is fragmentary at best.
Moreover, we have no access to any of those putative alternative universes. We have no experimental method by which anthropic hypotheses may be tested. Even if the existence of such universes were to follow firmly from well-established theories—of quantum mechanics or gravitation, say—we could not be sure that there weren't better theories that predict no alternative universes. Until that time comes, if it ever does, it seems to me premature to put faith in the Anthropic Principle as an argument for human centrality or uniqueness.
Finally, even if the Universe were intentionally created to allow for the emergence of life or intelligence, other beings may exist on countless worlds. If so, it would be cold comfort to anthropocentrists that we inhabit one of the few universes that allow life and intelligence.
There is something stunningly narrow about how the Anthropic Principle is phrased. Yes, only certain laws and constants of nature are consistent with our kind of life. But essentially the same laws and constants are required to make a
rock. So why not talk about a Universe designed so rocks could one day come to be, and strong and weak Lithic Principles? If stones could philosophize, I imagine Lithic Principles would be at the intellectual frontiers.
There are cosmological models being formulated today in which even the entire Universe is nothing special. Andrei Linde, formerly of the Lebedev Physical Institute in Moscow and now
at Stanford University, has incorporated current understanding of the strong and weak nuclear forces and quantum physics into a new cosmological model. Linde envisions a vast Cosmos, much larger than our Universe—perhaps extending to infinity both in space and time—not the paltry 15 billion light-years or so in radius and 15 billion years in age which are the usual understanding. In this Cosmos there is, as here, a kind of quantum fluff in which tiny structures— much smaller than an electron—are everywhere forming, reshaping, and dissipating; in which, as here, fluctuations in absolutely empty space create pairs of elementary particles—an electron and a positron, for example. In the froth of quantum bubbles, the vast majority remain submicroscopic. But a tiny fraction inflate, grow, and achieve respectable universehood. They are so far away from us, though—much farther than the 15 billion light-years that is the conventional scale of our universe—that, if they exist, they appear to be wholly inaccessible and undetectable.
Most of these other universes reach a maximum size and then collapse, contract to a point, and disappear forever. Others may oscillate. Still others may expand without limit. In different universes there will be different laws of nature. We live, Linde argues, in one such universe—one in which the physics is congenial for growth, inflation, expansion, galaxies, stars, worlds, life. We imagine our universe to be unique, but it is one of an immense number—perhaps an infinite number—of equally valid, equally independent, equally isolated universes. There will be life in some, and not in others. In this view the observable Universe is just a newly formed backwater of a much vaster, infinitely old, and wholly unobservable Cosmos. If something like this is right, even our residual pride, pallid as it must be, of living in the only universe is denied to us.3
Maybe someday, despite current evidence, a means will be devised to peer into adjacent universes, sporting very different laws of nature, and we will see what else is possible. Or perhaps inhabitants of adjacent universes can peer into ours. Of course, in such speculations we have far exceeded the bounds of knowledge. But if something like Linde's Cosmos is true, there is—amazingly—still another devastating deprovincialization awaiting us.
Our powers are far from adequate to be creating universes anytime soon. Strong Anthropic Principle ideas are not amenable to proof (although Linde's cosmology does have some testable features). Extraterrestrial life aside, if self-congratulatory pretensions to centrality have now retreated to such bastions impervious to experiment, then the sequence of scientific battles with human chauvinism would seem to have been, at least largely, won.
THE LONG-STANDING VIEW, as summarized by the philosopher Immanuel Kant, that "without man . . . the whole of creation would be a mere wilderness, a thing in vain, and have no final end" is revealed to be self-indulgent folly. A Principle of Mediocrity seems to apply to all our circumstances. We could not have known beforehand that the evidence would be, so repeatedly and thoroughly, incompatible with the proposition that human beings are at center stage in the Universe. But most of the debates have now been settled decisively in favor of a position that, however painful, can be encapsulated in a single sentence: We have not been given the lead in the cosmic drama.
Perhaps someone else has. Perhaps no one else has. In either case, we have good reason for humility.

Porém o telescópio de Galileu revelou que «a Lua seguramente não possui uma superfície lisa e polida» e que estes outros mundos podem aparentar ser «igualmente semelhantes à superfície da própria Terra.» A Lua e os outros planetas provaram, sem sombra de dúvidas, que tinham igual direito a serem considerados mundos, tal como a Terra – com montanhas, crateras, atmosferas, calotas polares, nuvens e, no caso de Saturno, um conjunto deslumbrante de anéis circunferenciais nunca antes visto. Após milénios de debate filosófico, a questão foi resolvida decisivamente a favor da «pluralidade de mundos». Estes mundos podem ser vastamente diferentes do nosso planeta. Talvez nenhum seja tão compatível para abrigar vida como o nosso. Mas a Terra está longe de ser o único mundo com vida..
Este seria o próximo Grande Rebaixamento, experiências depreciativas, demonstrações da nossa insignificância aparente, feridas que a ciência infligiu ao orgulho humano, em busca dos factos de Galileu.
«Bem, mesmo que a Terra não esteja no centro do Universo, pelo menos o Sol está. O Sol é o nosso sol. Portanto a Terra está aproximadamente no centro do Universo.», esperavam alguns. Talvez assim algum do nosso orgulho pudesse ser preservado. Contudo, no século XIX, a astronomia observacional já revelara o facto de que o Sol era apenas uma estrela solitária contida no agregado autogravitacional de sois a que denomina-mos a Via Láctea. O nosso Sol, juntamente com a sua plateia de pequenos planetas pouco iluminados, não só está muito longe do centro da galáxia, como está situado num setor indistinguível de um braço espiral obscuro. Estamos a 30 mil anos-luz do centro.
«Então, a nossa Via Láctea é a única galáxia existente.» A Via Láctea é uma galáxia entre milhares de milhões, talvez ainda centenas de milhares de milhões de galáxias, todas indistinguíveis quer em massa, brilho ou pela configuração e disposição das suas estrelas. Algumas fotografias do céu profundo1 revelam que existem mais galáxias para além dos limites da Via Láctea do que as estrelas contidas pela mesma. Cada galáxia é um universo de ilhas que contém, possivelmente, centenas de milhares de milhões de sóis. Tal imagem é um sermão profundo sobre a humildade.
«Pois, então, pelo menos a nossa galáxia situa-se no centro do Universo». Não, também não está. Após a descoberta da expansão do Universo, muitas pessoas convergiram, naturalmente, para a ideia de que a Via Láctea se encontrava no centro da expansão, e que todas as outras galáxias se afastavam de nós. Reconhecemos, presentemente, que qualquer astrónomo que se encontre numa qualquer outra galáxia veria todas as outras galáxias a fugirem dele; qualquer astrónomo, a menos que fosse muito cauteloso, chegaria à conclusão de que ele estava no centro do Universo. De facto, esta expansão não possui um centro, o Big Bang não tem um ponto de origem, pelo menos não dentro de um espaço tridimensional comum.
«Bem, mesmo que existam centenas de milhares de milhões de galáxias, cada uma com centenas de milhares de milhões de estrelas, não existe uma outra estrela com planetas». Se não existem outros planetas, para além dos confins do nosso Sistema Solar, então é possível que não existam outras formas de vida no Universo. Talvez assim a nossa unicidade possa ser salva. Visto que os planetas são pequenos e refletem a luz solar com um brilho ténue, são difíceis de encontrar. Embora as tecnologias aplicáveis estejam a progredir a um ritmo estonteante, até mesmo um mundo gigantesco como Júpiter, que está na órbita da estrela vizinha mais próxima, Alpha Centauri, seria difícil de identificar. A nossa ignorância foi razão de júbilo para os geocentristas.
Em tempos, houve uma teoria científica – que não só foi bem recebida, mas também prevaleceu – que presumia que o Sistema Solar formou-se devido à quase colisão entre o nosso antigo Sol e outra estrela; segundo essa teoria a interação gravitacional diferencial2 atraiu porções de material solar que condensaram rapidamente, dando origem a planetas. Tendo em conta que a maior parte do espaço é vazio e que as quase colisões entre estrelas são muito raras, concluiu-se que existiriam pouquíssimos outros sistemas planetários – possivelmente apenas um outro, em volta da outra estrela que há muito tempo ajudou a formar os mundos do nosso Sistema Solar. No início dos meus estudos, fiquei estupefacto, e desapontado, por tal ideia alguma vez ter sido levada a sério. Porque, no que toca aos planetas de outras estrelas, a ausência de evidências foi considerada evidências de ausência.
Nos nossos tempos, temos provas sólidas da existência de pelo menos três planetas que orbitam uma estrela extremamente densa, o pulsar B1257+12, sobre a qual voltarei a abordar mais tarde. Também descobrimos que, no caso de mais de metade das estrelas com uma massa semelhante à do Sol, no início da sua formação, estavam rodeadas por grandes discos de gases e poeiras, sendo a partir destes que, aparentemente, os planetas se formam. Agora, os outros sistemas planetários aparentam ser mais comuns, até é possível que existam mundos como a Terra. Caso existam, dentro das próximas décadas, devemos, pelo menos, de conseguir elaborar um inventário dos planetas de maior dimensão de centenas de estrelas vizinhas.
«Então, se a nossa posição no espaço não revela o nosso papel especial, então revela a nossa posição no tempo: Estamos neste Universo desde O Começo (mais dia, menos dia). Foram-nos atribuídas responsabilidades especiais pelo Criador.» Em tempos, pareceu razoável aceitar que o Universo surgiu um pouco antes da nossa memória coletiva ter sido obscurecida pela passagem do tempo e pelo analfabetismo dos nossos antepassados. Em termos gerais, isso passou-se há centenas ou milhares de anos. Muitas vezes, as religiões que pretendem descrever a origem do Universo especificam – implícita ou explicitamente – uma data aproximada de origem, um aniversário do mundo.
Se, por exemplo, adicionarmos todas as gerações referidas no livro do Génesis, obtemos uma idade da Terra: mais ou menos, 6 mil anos. Diz-se que o Universo é tão velho como a Terra. Esta é ainda a tradição ensinada pelos fundamentalistas judaicos, cristãos e muçulmanos, e está claramente presente no calendário judaico.
Mas se o Universo for assim tão novo, isto levanta uma questão inconveniente: como podem existir objetos astronómicos a mais de 6 mil anos-luz de distância de nós? Isto pois a luz demora um ano a percorrer um ano-luz, 10 mil anos a percorrer 10 mil anos-luz, e por ai em diante. Ao observarmos o centro da Via Láctea, a luz visível foi emitida do seu ponto de origem há 30 mil anos. A galáxia em espiral mais próxima, semelhante à nossa, a M31, na constelação de Andrómeda, situa-se a 2 milhões anos-luz de distância, portanto vemo-la como esta era há 2 milhões de anos, quando a luz partiu na sua longa viagem até à Terra. E quando se observam quasares3 a 5 mil milhões anos-luz, vemo-los tal como eram há 5 mil milhões de anos, antes da formação da Terra (hoje em dia, certamente, terão um aspeto muito diferente).
Se, apesar deste facto, ainda aceitássemos a verdade literal das escrituras religiosas, como poderíamos reconciliar os dados? Julgo que a única conclusão plausível é que Deus criou recentemente os fotões de luz que chegam à Terra de forma tão coerente, de modo a iludir gerações de astrónomos quanto à existência de galáxias e quasares, levando-os propositadamente à conclusão errada de que o Universo é vasto e antigo. Esta teologia é tão malévola que ainda tenho dificuldade em acreditar que alguém a tenha considerado com seriedade, independentemente do quão devoto uma pessoa possa ser às inspirações divinas de qualquer escritura religiosa.
Além destes fatores, a datação radiométrica das rochas, a abundância de crateras de impacto em outros mundos, a evolução das estrelas, e a expansão do Universo, todos estes exemplos apresentam provas irrefutáveis e independentes de que o nosso Universo tem muitos milhares de milhões de anos de idade – apesar das afirmações confiantes de teólogos respeitados, os quais afirmam que tal noção é contrária à palavra de Deus e que qualquer informação relativa à antiguidade do mundo é apenas acessível através da fé.4 Todas estas provas, também, teriam de ter sido fabricadas por uma deidade maliciosa e enganadora – a menos que o mundo seja muito mais velho do que os literalistas das religiões judaico-cristã-islâmica creem. Obviamente, isto não causa problemas para os muitos crentes que consideram a Bíblia e o Alcorão guias morais, históricos e boa literatura, mas que, porém, reconhecem que a perspetiva do mundo natural contida nestes textos reflete a ciência rudimentar dos tempos em que foram produzidos.
Passaram-se épocas inteiras antes da formação da Terra. E muitas mais épocas passarão antes da sua destruição. É preciso estabelecer a distinção entre a idade atual da Terra (cerca de 4,5 mil milhões de anos) e a idade atual do Universo (cerca de 15 mil milhões de anos, desde o Big Bang). Quando a Terra se formou, já tinham passado dois terços do gigantesco intervalo de tempo que decorreu desde a origem do Universo até à nossa época. Algumas estrelas e sistemas planetários são milhares de milhões de anos mais novos, outros são igualmente mais velhos. Mas no livro do Génesis, no capítulo 1, versículo 1, o Universo e a Terra são criados no mesmo dia. As religiões hindu-budista-jain tendem a não confundir os dois eventos.
O ser humano já chegou um pouco atrasado. Surgimos no último instante do calendário cósmico. A história do Universo até ao presente estava 99,998 % concluída antes de a nossa espécie aparecer em cena. Com a passagem do tempo, não poderíamos ter assumido quaisquer responsabilidades especiais pelo nosso planeta, pela nossa vida, ou por qualquer outra coisa. Não estávamos presentes.
«Bem, se não conseguimos encontrar nada de especial sobre a nossa posição ou a nossa época, então deve se haver algo de especial na nossa movimentação.» Newton e todos os outros grandes físicos clássicos acreditavam que a velocidade da Terra no espaço constituía um «sistema de referência privilegiado»5. É exatamente esta a designação utilizada. Albert Einstein, que durante toda a sua vida criticou avidamente os preconceitos e os privilégios, considerou que esta física «absoluta» não era mais que um fragmento do passado, um chauvinismo terrestre progressivamente desacreditado. Segundo o seu ponto de vista, as leis da Natureza eram as mesmas independentemente da velocidade ou do sistema de referência do observador. Partindo deste aspeto, Einstein desenvolveu a Teoria Especial da Relatividade. As suas consequências são bizarras, parecendo contrariar excessivamente a intuição e o senso comum – mas apenas a altas velocidades. Múltiplas observações cuidadosas revelaram que a sua teoria justamente famosa é uma descrição precisa de como o mundo funciona. O nosso senso comum e as nossas intuições podem estar equivocados. As nossas preferências não contam para nada. Não vivemos num sistema de referência privilegiado.
Uma das consequências da relatividade especial é a dilatação do tempo – a desaceleração do tempo à medida que um objeto se aproxima da velocidade da luz. Ainda se debate se esta dilatação do tempo aplica-se apenas a relógios e a partículas elementares – e, presumivelmente, também a ritmos circadianos e outros de plantas, animais e micróbios – mas não aos relógios biológicos do ser humano. É-nos sugerido que foi concedida à nossa espécie uma imunidade especial às leis da Natureza, as quais devem, segundo esta hipótese, estabelecer a distinção entre aglomerados de matéria merecedores desta imunidade dos não merecedores (na realidade, as provas que Einstein apresentou para a teoria especial da relatividade especial não valorizam tais distinções). A ideia de que os seres humanos são exceções à regra é apenas mais uma forma da noção da criação especial.
«Então, se a nossa posição, época, movimentação e o nosso mundo não são únicos, talvez o ser humano seja. Somos diferentes dos outros animais. Fomos criados especialmente. A devoção especial do Criador do Universo é evidente em nós.» Esta posição foi defendida com fervor tanto por motivos religiosos, como por outras. Contudo, em pleno século XIX, Charles Darwin demonstrou convincentemente como uma espécie pode evoluir para outra através de processos completamente naturais, os quais se resumem à preservação as hereditariedades favoráveis e a rejeição das não favoráveis, um processo cruel da Natureza. «O Homem, na sua arrogância, julga-se uma grande obra, digna da interposição de uma divindade,» Darwin escreveu, telegraficamente, no seu caderno de notas. «Seria mais humilde e mais verdadeiro, creio eu, considerá-lo criado a partir dos animais.» As ligações intimas e profundas que os seres humanos partilham com as outras formas de vida da Terra foram comprovadas, efetivamente, nos finais do século XX, através da nova ciência biológica molecular.
EM CADA ÉPOCA, os chauvinismos autocomplacentes são postos em causa numa outra arena do debate científico – por exemplo, neste século, tentou-se entender a natureza da sexualidade humana, a existência de uma mente subconsciente e o facto de muitos males psiquiátricos e «defeitos» de carácter terem uma origem molecular. Mas não ficaram por aqui:
«Mesmo que tenhamos alguma proximidade genética com alguns animais, continuamos a ser diferentes – não apenas em grau, mas em espécie – no que realmente conta: raciocínio, autoconsciência, fabrico de ferramentas, ética, altruísmo, religião, linguagem, nobreza de carácter.» Mesmo que o ser humano possua traços que o diferenciam de outros animais, e vice-versa, – de outra forma, como conseguiríamos distinguir uma espécie de outra? – a singularidade do ser humano é exagerada, por vezes, a níveis ridículos. Os chimpanzés raciocinam, têm consciência de si, constroem ferramentas, manifestam devoção, e por ai em diante. Os chimpanzés e o ser humano partilham 99,6% dos seus genes ativos (Ann Druyan e eu delineámos as evidências no nosso livro, Sombras de Antepassados Esquecidos.).
No âmbito a cultura popular, uma posição completamente oposta também pode ser adotada, embora também seja impulsionada pelo chauvinismo humano (juntamente com a falta de imaginação): os contos infantis e os desenhos animados criam animais que falam, animais com roupa, a viver em casas, a usar garfos e facas. Os três ursos dormem em camas. A coruja e o gatinho vão para o mar num lindo barco verde-ervilha. As mães dinossauro abraçam as crias. Os pelicanos entregam o correio. Os cães guiam carros. Uma minhoca apanha um ladrão. Os animais de estimação têm nomes de pessoas. Bonecas, quebra-nozes, chávenas e pires dançam e têm opiniões. O prato foge com a colher. Na coleção Thomas, the Tank Engine (Tomás, a Locomotiva), até locomotivas e vagões antropomórficos são retratados de um modo encantador. Independentemente do objeto dos nossos pensamentos, seja este animado ou inanimado, temos a tendência de lhe atribuir características humanas. Não conseguimos evitá-lo. As imagens surgem com facilidade na nossa mente. As crianças têm um carinho evidente por elas.
Quando se costuma falar em céus «ameaçadores», em mares «bravos», que os diamantes «resistem» a riscos, que a Terra «atrai» um asteroide, ou que um átomo está «excitado», estamos mais uma vez a ser atraídos por uma perspetiva animista do mundo. Estamos a reificar. Um nível antigo do nosso pensamento concede vida, paixões e previdência à natureza inanimada.
A ideia de que a Terra possui uma consciência própria tem-se, recentemente, vindo a desenvolver à margem da hipótese «Gaia». Esta crença era comum entre os antigos Gregos e os primeiros Cristãos. Orígenes questionava-se se «a Terra também, segundo a sua natureza, é responsável por algum pecado.» Muitos antigos académicos pensavam que as estrelas tinham vida própria. Era esta a posição de Orígenes, de S. Ambrósio (mentor de S. Agostinho) e até de S. Tomás de Aquino, de uma forma mais reservada. A posição da escola de filosofia do Estoicismo quanto à natureza do Sol foi defendida por Cícero, no século I A.C.: «Visto que o Sol se assemelha aos fogos contidos nos corpos das criaturas vivas, conclui-se que este deve também estar vivo.»
No geral, parece que estas atitudes animistas têm vindo a ser propagadas recentemente. Num inquérito de 1954, feito à população americana, 75% das pessoas que participaram no inquérito diriam que o Sol não estava vivo; em 1989, apenas 30% apoiaria uma premissa tão precipitada. Quando posta a possibilidade de um pneu de um automóvel conseguir sentir alguma coisa, 90% dos inquiridos responderam que não, mas este número caiu para 73%, em 1989.
Aqui verificamos um defeito – sério, em algumas circunstâncias – na nossa capacidade de compreensão do mundo. Parece que nos vemos forçados a projetar a nossa própria natureza, caracteristicamente e indiscriminadamente, na Natureza. Embora possa originar uma visão progressivamente distorcida da realidade, este defeito possui uma grande virtude – esta projeção é a condição prévia essencial para a existência da compaixão.
«Pronto, pode ser que, afinal de contas, não somos nada de especial. Por mais humilhante que seja, talvez tenhamos um grau de parentesco com os macacos, mas ao menos somos os melhores exemplos de inteligência no Universo, à exceção de Deus e os seus anjos.» Escreve-me um correspondente: «Segundo a minha experiência, tenho a certeza absoluta disto. Não existe vida consciente em nenhum outro lugar no Universo. A humanidade regressa, pois, ao seu legítimo lugar como centro do universo.» Contudo, por parcial influência da ciência e da ficção científica, hoje em dia, a maior parte das pessoas, nos Estados Unidos, rejeita esta premissa – por razões essencialmente afirmadas pelo antigo filósofo grego Crisipo de Solis: «Seria um ato de loucura e de arrogância, qualquer ser humano, em existência, acreditar que não existe nada no mundo superior a ele próprio.»
Mas o simples facto é que ainda não encontrámos vida extraterrestre. Ainda estamos nos primeiros passos de observação. A questão está em aberto. Se tivesse que adivinhar, – tendo em consideração a nossa longa sucessão de chauvinismos fracassados – diria que o Universo está repleto de seres muito mais inteligentes e avançados que nós. Mas é claro que posso sempre estar errado. No melhor dos casos, uma conclusão destas funda-se num argumento de plausibilidade, oriundo do número de planetas em existência, a ubiquidade da matéria orgânica, as enormes escalas temporais que permitem que a evolução aconteça, entre outros fatores. Não é uma demonstração científica. Esta questão é das mais fascinantes da ciência. Como é descrito neste livro, só recentemente é que se desenvolveram as ferramentas para a abordarmos seriamente.
Então e relativamente à questão da possibilidade de sermos capazes de criar inteligências superiores às nossas? Os computadores executam operações matemáticas de rotina que nenhuma pessoa consegue manusear sem ajuda. Superam campeões mundiais de damas e grandes mestres de xadrez, replicam e percebem várias línguas, produzem pequenos contos apresentáveis e também conseguem construir composições musicais, adaptam-se quando cometem erros, e pilotam navios, aviões e naves espaciais de forma competente. As suas capacidades são aperfeiçoadas progressivamente. São cada vez mais pequenos, mais rápidos e mais baratos. Em cada ano que passa, a maré do avanço científico avança progressivamente sobre a ilha da unicidade do intelectual humano, pondo os seus náufragos em apuros. Se, numa etapa tão primária da nossa evolução tecnológica, conseguimos vir tão longe ao criarmos inteligência feita de silício e metal, que conseguiremos alcançar nas décadas e séculos que seguirão? Que acontecerá quando máquinas inteligentes forem capazes de produzir máquinas ainda mais inteligentes?
TALVEZ A INDICAÇÃO MAIS CLARA de que a busca por uma posição privilegiada imerecida para os seres humanos nunca será completamente abandonada é o que os físicos e astrónomos chamam de Princípio Antrópico. Embora, Principio Antropocêntrico seja um nome mais apropriado. Surge de várias formas. O Princípio Antrópico «Fraco» denota que, se as leis do Universo e as constantes físicas – a velocidade da luz, a carga elétrica de um eletrão, a constante gravitacional universal, ou a constante de Planck, da quântica mecânica – fossem diferentes, os eventos que levaram à origem do Homem nunca se teriam sucedido. Segundo outras leis e constantes, os átomos não se teriam conseguido manter unidos, as estrelas evoluiriam demasiado depressa para que nos planetas circundantes houvesse tempo suficiente para o desenvolvimento da vida, os elementos químicos que compõem a vida nunca teriam sido gerados, e assim adiante. Leis diferentes, resultados diferentes (os quais podem englobar a inexistência do ser humano).
Não há controvérsia em relação ao Principio Antrópico Fraco: se pudéssemos alterar as leis e as constantes da Natureza, isso daria origem a um Universo muito diferente – em muitos casos, um universo incompatível com a vida.6 O simples facto da nossa existência no Universo implica (mas não impõe) que existem restrições nas leis da Natureza. Em contraste, os vários Princípios Antrópicos «Fortes» vão ainda mais longe: alguns dos defensores desta teoria deduzem que as leis da Natureza e os valores das constantes físicas foram definidos (não pergunte como ou por quem) com o propósito de encaminharem a eventual criação do Homem. Dizem eles, que a maioria dos outros possíveis universos é inóspita. E assim, ressuscita a antiga ideia vangloriada de que o Universo foi feito para nós.
Relembra-me o Dr. Pangloss, em Candido, de Voltaire, convencido que este mundo, mesmo com todas as suas imperfeições, é o melhor possível. É como jogar a primeira mão num jogo de cartas e vencer, sabendo que existem outras 54 mil quatriliões (5,4 x ) combinações possíveis que poderia ter recebido...e consequentemente concluir, estupidamente, que existe um deus dos jogos de cartas e que ele me favorece, um deus que ordenou as cartas e baralho-as, estando a minha vitória determinada desde o Inicio dos Tempos. Desconhecemos o número exato de jogadas vencedoras no baralho cósmico, quantos outros universos, leis da Natureza e constantes físicas que podem levar à criação da vida e de inteligência, e, por ventura, até a ilusões de autoimportância. Tendo em conta que sabemos praticamente nada sobre como o Universo foi feito – ou sequer se foi construído –, é difícil de explorar estas noções produtivamente.
Voltaire interrogava-se: «Porque é que as coisas existem?»; a formulação de Einstein teve o propósito de levantar a questão se Deus teve alguma escolha na criação do Universo. Porém, se o Universo é infinitamente antigo – se o Big Bang, de há 15 mil milhões de anos, é o mais recente ponto referência numa série infinita de contrações e expansões cósmicas –, então este nunca foi criado e questionarmo-nos quanto ao porquê da natureza do Universo é inútil.
Por outro lado, se o Universo tem uma idade finita, porque é que é como é? Porque não lhe foi atribuído uma natureza diferente? Que leis da Natureza são compatíveis? Será que existem leis universais que especificam estas ligações? Será possível descobri-las? De todas as leis da gravidade concebíveis, quais são as que podem coexistir simultaneamente com as leis de física quântica concebíveis que provam a existência de matéria macroscópica? Serão todas as leis que concebemos possíveis, ou será que existe um número restrito que pode, de alguma forma, tornar-se real? Como é óbvio, não fazemos a mínima ideia de como determinar que leis da Natureza são «possíveis» e quais não são. Simultaneamente, também não temos senão a noção mais rudimentar dos tipos de correlações «permitidas» entre estas mesmas leis.
A lei de gravitação universal de Newton, por exemplo, específica que a força gravitacional que atraí dois corpos, mutuamente, é inversamente proporcional ao quadrado da distância entre estes. Uma pessoa pesa um quarto do seu peso habitual, se se encontrar a uma distância que corresponde ao dobro da distância entre o centro da Terra e a sua superfície; a uma distância 10 vezes superior, passará a pesar apenas um centésimo do seu peso normal, etc. É esta lei do inverso do quadrado que permite a ocorrência das delicadas órbitas eclípticas dos planetas à volta do Sol – e também permite as trajetórias minuciosas necessárias para as nossas naves espaciais interplanetárias. Se r é a distância entre os centros de duas massas, dizemos que as forças gravitacionais variam segundo 1/.
Mas se o expoente fosse diferente – se a lei gravitacional fosse 1/, e não 1/ – as órbitas nunca se fechariam; no decurso de milhares de milhões de revoluções, os planetas iriam descrever um movimento em espiral, aproximando-se do Sol, até serem consumidos pelos seus fogos intensos ou afastando-se, até se perderem nas profundezas interestelares. Se o Universo tivesse sido construído segundo a lei da quarta potência inversa (1/), em vez da lei do inverso do quadrado, não restava muito tempo até que deixassem de existir planetas habitáveis para os seres vivos.
Com todas as possíveis leis de força gravitacional, como é que temos a sorte de viver num universo que abriga uma lei consistente com a vida? Em primeiro lugar, temos esta «sorte» porque, se não a tivéssemos, não estaríamos cá para colocar a questão. Não é nenhum mistério que seres inquisitivos, que evoluem em planetas, podem ser encontrados apenas em universos que admitam planetas. Em segundo lugar, a lei do inverso do quadrado não é a única constante estável com milhares de milhões de anos. Qualquer lei de potência com uma força menor a 1/ (1/ ou 1/r, por exemplo) manterá um planeta na proximidade de uma órbita circular, mesmo que seja «empurrado». Frequentemente, temos a tendência para esquecer a possibilidade de que outras possíveis leis da Natureza podem ser compatíveis com a vida.
Porém, existe um outro ponto a destacar: não é por acaso que existe a lei do inverso do quadrado da gravitação. Quando a teoria de Newton é compreendida segundo a mais abrangente da teoria da relatividade geral, reconhecemos que o expoente da lei da gravidade é de 2, pois vivemos num universo com três dimensões físicas. Nem todas as leis gravitacionais estão livremente disponíveis e acessíveis a um Criador. Mesmo quando fornecido com um número infinito de universos tridimensionais, para um grande deus se entreter a brincar, a lei gravitacional teria obrigatoriamente de ser a lei do inverso do quadrado. Podemos dizer, então, que a gravidade Newtoniana não é uma faceta acidental do nosso universo, mas sim uma faceta necessária.
Segundo a teoria de relatividade geral, a gravidade acontece devido à dimensionalidade e curvatura do espaço. Quando se fala sobre a gravidade, referimo-nos a ondulações no espaço- -tempo. Tentar compreender este facto não é assim tão aparentemente óbvio, chegando até a ir contra algumas noções de senso comum. Mas após uma examinação mais profunda, os conceitos de massa e de gravidade não estão separados, são ramificações da geometria subjacente do espaço-tempo.
Pergunto-me se algo assim não é geralmente aplicável a todas as hipóteses antrópicas. As leis e constantes físicas, das quais estamos dependentes, não são mais que membros de uma categoria, possivelmente vasta, de outras leis e constantes – sendo algumas destas mesmas leis e constantes compatíveis com um modo de vida. Frequentemente, não desvendamos – ou simplesmente, não conseguimos desvendar – que realidade estes outros universos permitem. Para além deste facto, nem todas as escolhas arbitrárias de uma lei da Natureza ou de uma constante física podem ser acessíveis, nem mesmo para um criador de universos. A nossa compreensão de quais leis e quais constantes estão disponíveis é, na melhor das hipóteses, fragmentária.
Adicionalmente, não temos acesso a nenhum destes universos alternativos hipotéticos. Não existe um método experimental segundo o qual possamos testar as hipóteses antrópicas. Mesmo que estes universos existissem sob um controlo firme de teorias bem consagradas – como a mecânica quântica e a gravitação –, não haveria maneira de certificarmo-nos que existem teorias melhores, que rejeitam a ideia de universos alternativos. Até essa altura chegar, se chegar de todo, julgo que é prematuro investir no Principio Antrópico como argumento para o antropocentrismo e a singularidade humana.
Para terminar, mesmo que, porventura, o Universo tivesse sido criado intencionalmente para que a vida e a inteligência emergisse, ainda há a possibilidade de existirem outros seres em inúmeros outros mundos. Se assim for, o facto de habitarmos em um dos poucos universos que permite a difusão da vida e da inteligência deve ser uma triste consolação para os antropocentristas.
Há algo incrivelmente tacanho na maneira como o Principio Antrópico é formulado. É verdade que apenas certas leis e constantes da natureza são consistentes com o nosso tipo de vida. Porém, pelo mesmo princípio, estas mesmas leis e constantes são, em essência, necessárias para criar uma rocha. Sendo assim, porque não se fala de um universo feito especificamente para que as rochas possam um dia existir? Porque não se debatem os Princípios Líticos fortes e fracos? Se as rochas pudessem filosofar, creio que o Princípio Lítico seria referente às fronteiras intelectuais.
Presentemente, estão a ser formulados modelos cosmológicos em que o Universo inteiro não é nada de especial. Andrei Linde, um físico que já pertenceu ao Instituto de Física de Lebedev, em Moscovo, e que está atualmente a exercer funções na Universidade de Stanford, incorporou o nosso conhecimento atual das forças nucleares fortes e fracas, e de física quântica num novo modelo cosmológico. Linde prevê um Cosmos extenso, muito maior que o nosso Universo – possivelmente expandindo-se infinitamente em termos espaciais e temporais –, estende-se além dos míseros (aproximadamente) 15 mil milhões de anos-luz de raio e 15 mil milhões de anos de idade, segundo a nossa conceção. Tal como no nosso universo, neste Cosmos existe uma espécie de penugem quântica, em que pequenas estruturas – muito mais pequenas do que um eletrão – se formam, se reorganizam e se dissipam por todo o espaço. Tal como aqui, as oscilações em espaços absolutamente vazios originam pares de partículas elementares – um eletrão e um positrão, por exemplo. Na espuma das bolhas quânticas, a vasta maioria destas estruturas existe a um nível submicroscópico. Mas uma pequeníssima fração infla, cresce e alcança uma universalidade respeitável. Contudo, estão tão distantes de nós – mais distantes que os 15 mil milhões de anos-luz que constituem nossa a escala universal convencional – que, se de facto existirem, parecerão ser completamente inacessíveis e indetetáveis.
A maioria destes outros universos chega ao limite do seu tamanho e entram em colapso, contraem-se até certo ponto e desaparecem para sempre. Outros oscilam. E outros ainda estendem-se sem fim. Universos diferentes requerem leis da natureza diferentes. Segundo Linde, vivemos num destes universos – um universo onde as leis da física são favoráveis para o desenvolvimento, para a inflação, para a expansão, para a existência de galáxias, estrelas, mundos e para a vida. Julgamos que o nosso universo é único, mas não é mais que um entre um número indefinível – possivelmente infinito – de universos igualmente válidos, independentes e isolados entre si. Em alguns destes universos haverá vida, noutros não. De acordo com esta perspetiva, o Universo observável é um lugar isolado e recém-formado de um Cosmos muito mais vasto, indefinidamente antigo e inobservável na sua totalidade. Se este pensamento estiver correto, até mesmo o nosso orgulho residual, empalidecido, de viver no único universo, é-nos negado.7
Contrariamente às provas atuais, talvez um dia possamos conceber um meio de espreitar para o interior de universos adjacentes, com leis da natureza muito diferentes das nossas, e então veremos que outros fenómenos são possíveis. Ou talvez o oposto aconteça. Pode ser que os habitantes de um universo adjacente tentem espreitar para o nosso. Obviamente, no que toca a especulações desta natureza, estamos a exceder os limites do nosso conhecimento atual. Mas, se algo semelhante ao Cosmos de Linde for possível, então – espantosamente – aguarda-nos ainda outra despromoção devastadora.
As nossas capacidades estão ainda muito longe de permitir-nos podermos criar universos. As ideias contidas no Princípio Antrópico Forte não são suscetíveis de serem alteradas com novas provas (embora a cosmologia de Linde possua algumas características suscetíveis a experimentação). Excluindo a existência de vida extraterrestre, se as presunções de autocomplacência, quanto à centralidade, refugiaram-se num bastião invulnerável à experimentação, então a sucessão de batalhas científicas contra o chauvinismo do Homem parecem ter sido vencidas, na sua grande maioria.
É REVELADO QUE O PONTO DE VISTA DURADOURO, resumido pelo filósofo Immanuel Kant, de que «sem o Homem...toda a criação seria selvagem, algo vão e sem fim», não passa senão de idiotice complacente. O Princípio da Mediocridade parece ser aplicável a todas as nossas circunstâncias. Não havia modo de antecipar que as provas contra a ideia de que os seres humanos têm um papel central no Universo seriam, tão repetida e minuciosamente, incompatíveis. Mas grande parte dos debates já foram resolvidos decisivamente a favor de uma posição que, embora dolorosa, pode ser resumida numa única frase: Não nos foi concedido o papel principal no drama cósmico.
Talvez tenha sido concedido a outros. Talvez não tenha concedido a ninguém. Seja como for, temos boas razões para sermos humildes.
