Spanish to English: LAS MANIFESTACIONES DE ARTE RUPESTRE ESQUEMÁTICO DEL VALLE AMBLÉS EN SU CONTEXTO PROVINCIAL General field: Other Detailed field: Archaeology
Translation - English Research into the role of rock art in the neolithisation process has a long history in specific regions of the Iberian Peninsula and, in particular, in the area of the Mediterranean, where three of the main post-palaeolithic art forms can be found. Yet also in the interior of the Peninsula several examples of rock art and engravings have been attributed to the first producer groups. Such proposals have been the result of an analysis of rock art from the perspective of landscape archaeology, whereby the land appropriation strategies of itinerant groups to establish control of certain critical resources also included painted markers which would have had a symbolic function.
As regards schematic art, the reservations concerning its antiquity have disappeared due to the undeniable parallels of certain motifs on rock with moveable pieces from the chalcolithic. There is now no doubt that this can be ascribed – at least in terms of the initial phases – to the early neolithic in both the Mediterranean regions of the Peninsula and that of the regional early neolithic. Consequently, two perspectives are usually distinguished nowadays: ancient schematic art, which corresponds to the neolithic, and evolved art, developing in the Metal Age and continuing up to the Iron Age. The most widespread interpretation as to the purpose of schematic paintings and engravings is once again that of symbolic markers in land appropriation strategies.
