English to Chinese: Literature - When Broken Glass Floats
Source text - English My parents' future marriage had already been decided when they were children. Both their parents told them that someday they would marry each other. Both came from well-to-do families, which caused wide speculation about the marriage. Some thought that they were paired up because the brothers Kong Houng and Kong Lorng didn't want their wealth dispersed. This way, the family wealth was centralized. And in Cambodian culture, it's common for cousins to marry.
Fortunately, my father's feelings were in harmony with the ideas of his elders. When Pa turned seventeen, he fell in love with Mak. She was a bright girl, and strong in her ideas. As a child, she would sneak away to the Buddhist temple to learn to read and write in Khmer, and to read Pali, the language of the Cambodian bible. In time, she picked up French as well, a skill that was forbidden for women. Parents didn't want a daughter to have education for fear that she would write love letters before they had had a chance to arrange a suitable marriage. Denying education was but one way to cloister her. In many ways, Mak defied that, secretly studying on her own.

I set my career path to translation and interpretation at the tender age of 19 when Localization was till a relatively new terminology in Taiwan. I translated manuals for heavy machinery for petrochemical industries. I spent my waking hours studying and asking petrochemical engineers for proofreading.
For relaxation, I wrote extensively, and won national awards in prose.
After graduating with a professional training certificate in English/Chinese translation and interpretation from one of the most reputable programs in Taiwan, I continued to study database programming and received intensive training for 500 hours.
This unique combination of writing, localization and programming allowed me to quickly thrive in the localization industry. I started to coordinate projects with large multinational software companies at the age of 21.
After a year, I went to the Monterey Institute of International Studies to advance my studies. With scholarships, I finished BA and MA agrees within 3 years. Meanwhile, I continued to freelance for computer and marketing industries.
Upon graduation, I started to work for Lionbridge, first as a Chinese language specialist, and soon as Chinese language manager, managing Traditional and Simplified Chinese. Twice a week, I take classes in medical interpretation received scholarship. I started to interpret at Longwood medical area in Boston once a week.
Within 14 months I had to quit to take care of an ailing family member. I started to freelance as a project coordinator, working with linguists from 22 countries on Microsoft projects. Ever since language has been the center of my life.
Even though my profile says over 15 years of experience, in reality it's more than that. It's 21 solid years of work on translation, localization, transcreation and project coordination.
One thing I am very proud of is my discipline - I wake up early to schedule my day and finish work on time, while taking care of a young toddler and learning a new language. I believe in "compound effect" and "the power of habits".
