habiendo crecido, estudiado, y vivido en varios lugares de la Republica Mexicana, asi como en varios lugares de los USA lo siento pero no concuerdo, hay situaciones en que poner tu dinero se refiere a los hechos no a un papel. Valentia, honestidad, lealtad se demuestran con hechos y no con dinero o documentos. i.e. tu no le puedes responder a alguien que presume de valiente o que promete algo que te muestre un papelito.

Entiendo lo que dices, pero, ¿No es el mismo "concepto"?

A mi me parece que, si doy un pasito o dos para atrás, estamos diciendo lo mismo, ¿no? Nuestra diferencia parece ser solamente en la "amplitud" del marco coloquial en el que se aplica. A mi me encantó este “modismo” desde que lo escuché por primera vez, y durante los años que estuve en México lo usé casi indiscriminadamente, (hasta con el taquero de la esquina), no recuerdo que ningún mexicano me haya mirado raro, ni que haya entendido algo diferente a lo que yo quise expresar, (con otros modismos sí me pasó, como “hecho la mocha”, que no pude asimilar con igual “elegancia”), y por lo tanto si creo que entiendo bien la extensión de su aplicación. De hecho, lo he usado hasta con puertorriqueños que no han ido a México, y lo entienden muy bien, también.

dinero es algo de valor, lo mismo que un documento, mi punto sigue, papelito habla no es lo mismo que "putting your money where your mounth is". El dichoso papelito es como la llave que te abre la puerta, el abrete sesamo, ya sea para que te traiga lo que me pidas que te compre o que confirma tu situacion migratoria. El mexicano de "pura cepa" del que me platicas estaba en lo correcto te estaba pidiendo que validaras tu peticion. Dixit

No siempre es dinero lo que se implica con “papelito habla”. Para darte un ejemplo menos hipotético, recuerdo una situación en la que el tema no era dinero, sino mi condición migratoria para estar en el país, y en ese caso, de nada servía que yo estuviera legalmente en México si no le presentaba mi FM2 a la persona, claramente, el papelito habla, (y ese mexicano “de pura cepa” así me lo expresó). Un FM2 no es dinero. Reitero, tiene variedad de aplicaciones, igual que "put your money where your mouth is", depende del contexto, y la situación.

Lo siento Steve, creci en Mexico y no se de nadie que use la acepcion que tu das. Si alguien me ofrece un negocio demasiado bueno ( y ese negocio me interesa) mi respuesta seria , cuando lo ponemos en blanco y negro? (cuando hacemos el contrato?) o si es algo informal, vamos a comer y lo platicamos. Si contestas papelito habla la gente va entender que les estas pidiendo dinero, ni siquiera de cuanto es el negocio. Si lo que quieres preguntar es de a como es el negocio entonces preguntarias, de a como nos toca? y eso, en cuanto me va a salir? o de cuanta lana estamos hablando?

Ah, pero he estado en situaciones así. “Put your Money where your mouth is” no es pedir un favor. Si un marchante me está proponiendo un negocio que parece ser demasiado bueno, yo le podría contestar con “bueno, marchante, papelito habla, ¿he?” La misma situación en inglés: If a “merchant” is offering me a deal that seems to sound too good, I could answer him with “well, sir, put your money where your mouth is, hey?” In both cases it is “let me see it in writing”, or “show me the money” (metaphorically, of course, depending on the situation, what is being negotiated, etc.), like I said: it is not carved in stone, and so, I would not always answer to the same thing with “papelito habla”; it is not [ever] panacea, only one possibility. Some of these others, here and in the previous discussions, are good too!

And so is this discussion. If you put it all together, it is true wealth, in knowledge. Which is, after all, our “raw material”.

@ Steven. Nunca le pedirias un favor a un marchante sin por lo menos un adelanto a menos que fueses un cliente de confianza. Papelito habla es para situaciones mas delicadas i.e. voy de viaje a Francia o al mercado y alguien me pide X, Y y Z sin darme el dinero. Si es alguien a quien no conozco o alguien en quien no confio mi respuesta es "papelito habla" "te traigo el cambio de tu Hidalgo" o algo asi. Lo de "putting your money where your mounth is" se refiere a que lo haces debe corresponder a lo que dices. En otras palabras, actuar de manera coherente con lo que decimos.

To me it says that we are not afraid of the wondrous diversity that exists in the universe. I may answer this way today, and that tomorrow, to the same term, contexts change meanings, as does situation, and experience, and I too am constantly evolving. If I learn tomorrow that everything I said today is wrong, then tomorrow I will be marvelously, and quite correctly, inconsistent, and proudly so. As I have said before in these forums, there is as much to be learned from a bad answer as there is to learn from a good one. (And that is why I don’t delete my truly embarrassing, “whoopsydoos”.) It is all useful information, one way or another, even if it is not always correct. In other words, knowing what not to do, is as useful as knowing what to do. The Universe is not carved in stone, and neither is language.

We, who always answer, are explorers.

I agree with Lydia's point about inappropriate translations being selected. This happens frquently. As a result, when I look up a term in the Proz glossary, I click on the link to read the entire debate and quite often I either end up using a different suggested answer, or come up with a diffferent translation solution based in part of in whole, on the discussion or debate that took place. Quite often a valid translation is proposed, but one person throws in the monkey wrench by placing either a "neutral" or "disagree" and many other colleagues are frightened from any controversy and stay clear of that answer. Other times there is the snowball effect. In spite of all these human glitches, the debate is preserved and with due diligence and effort we can find or come up with an appropriate translation in most cases.

You make a very valid point! We all know that the glossaries, while useful, are frequently inaccurate. Too many times, the askers select an incorrect answer and thus it appears on the glossaries.

...but also, posting a question that has already been discussed before, (or even decided, even in several different instances and ways, as is the case here), does not necessarily invalidate the question. Personally I find the other solutions to this question, unsatisfying, and in such cases it is perfectly reasonable to pursue the matter further by posing yet another question for the same term. None of us who use the glossaries can deny that on more than one occasion, having several different discussions for the same term has been a great help, especially in “understanding” the various ways in which a particular term is interpreted, and can be used.

Indeed, there is always “more than one way to skin a cat.”

While I agree that the glossaries should be checked prior to posting a question, the fact remains that there are several entries selected as the correct answer. So how does the asker determine which one is correct? Based on the definition offered by the asker, some of these entries don't fit. IMO, telling someone to put their money where their mouth is, is telling them to back up what they are saying by taking action, instead of just talking about it.
