Citalopram has a nitrile group (CN) (triple bond between C and N) which can be converted into an imino ester, I would think.

I believe the imino ester is an intermediate which eventually conversts into the ethyl ester.

Esters can be formed from the reaction of alcohols (ethanol) with carboxylic acids. However, since nitriles are carboxylic acid precursors, then nitriles too can react with alcohols to produce esters. I will try to find some references.. If I am wrong, I will let you know.

agree Filippe Vasconcellos de Freitas Guimarães : Pinner reaction to form an imino ester and further hydrolysis to form the ethyl ester?

Wow! you deserve the points. Thank you very much for this source. It actually appears to be an "iminium ester" because of the positive charge on the imine... Thanks again.
