Arabic term

جار النجوم

Arabic to English Art/Literary Sports / Fitness / Recreation Syria
Hi everyone,

I'm translating a short story about 3 poor brothers. In this section, the writer is describing how the brothers dream of becoming famous footballers one day, like Ronaldo and Ronaldinho.

رونالدو كان فقیرا وصار نجماً؛ ومثله صار رونالدینو جار النجوم.

I would like to know if there's a difference between being a star and being the "neighbour" of a star. Does one indicate a higher level of fame than the other? This will help me to work out a more idiomatic phrase to use in English!

Thanks
Anam

جار النجوم Hi Anam, the phrase "جار النجوم" means " a star", which Ronaldinho was, too. In addition, above in space, the neighbors of the stars are the stars themselves. I guess the author used a metaphor to give the discourse a specific rythm. The boys are awestruck which naturally resonnates in their speech with two neighboring long vowels: ا in جار and و in النجوم

Contrastive emphasis is used, O.S.V instead of standard S.V.O. It serves the mood and rythm of "awe" I mentioned in the discussion section. Equally important, I personally believe that the syntactical shift renders the idiomacy that you feel you need to render in your translation.
Let me kust add that my attempt, herewith, is part of my own attempt at the entire second clause.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Interesting point about the awe being reflected in the long vowels of the phrase... I hadn't thought about that. Thanks for your explanation - I will certainly keep the OSV order in mind. Your English suggestion would make the phrase sound more archaic than I am aiming for, so I will think of an alternative :)"
