gemeint sind hier die strengen Auflagen für die Berufsausübung bzw. für den Beruf eines Apothekers . Lehrerstand, Ärztestand wird ins 'Engl. generell mit teachers, physicians übersetzt.

agree Bernhard Sulzer : I'm with you on "profession" and pharmacist profession or apothecary pr., not nec. on druggist. Here the person allowed to dispense prescription drugs is always called a pharmacist. That's what an "Apotheker" does.

status of the pharmacist

In America he did not find the same strict legal regulations to uphold the status of the pharmacist, a position which, in Germany, is held in high regard.

disagree Cetacea : "Stand" in this sense (as Ellen explains below) means profession rather than status.

neutral Bernhard Sulzer : "strict regulations for the pharmacist 'profession'" would be closer to the original phrasing with "Stand" IMO. But the word profession is sort of implied in the word pharmacist.
