The field of science education includes work in science content, science process (the scientific method), some social science, and some teaching pedagogy.
Physics education is characterized by the study of science that deals with matter and energy, and their interactions.
Physics First, a program endorsed by the American Association of Physics Teachers, is a curriculum in which 9th grade students take an introductory physics course. The purpose is to enrich students' understanding of physics, and allow for more detail to be taught in subsequent high school biology and chemistry classes. It also aims to increase the number of students who go on to take 12th grade physics or AP Physics, which are generally elective courses in American high schools.

Source text - Portuguese Esta pesquisa trata do Ensino de Ciências, História, Filosofia e Sociologia da Ciência e a questão de gênero no mundo científico. Com esses três pilares defende-se que ensino de ciências contextualizado à discussão de um acontecimento histórico, no qual uma mulher teve papel central, pode auxiliar no engajamento de mulheres na área. A mulher que aqui se destacou foi Henrietta Leavitt (1868 – 1921), uma calculadora no Observatório de Harvard, que nesta função chegou à Relação Período-Luminosidade, ferramenta que mais tarde seria essencial para o desenvolvimento de métodos de estimativa de grandes distâncias no espaço. Uma das pessoas que deu continuidade aos estudos sobre a relação foi Harlow Shapley (1885 – 1972), um astrônomo estadunidense que, devido a suas pesquisas, foi muito mais citado pelos pares do que ela. Henrietta Leavitt estava entre as primeiras mulheres contratadas no Observatório, portanto seu contexto social era de pioneirismo fora da esfera doméstica na virada do século XIX para o século XX. Considerando que existiram relações de gênero ao longo de sua vida e, principalmente, no que diz respeito ao estabelecimento da Relação Período-Luminosidade, buscou-se entender como Leavitt era vista na construção científica desse conceito. A metodologia de pesquisa utilizada foi análise documental, utilizando principalmente recortes de jornais do período, artigos científicos da área, trocas de correspondências e trechos de diários pessoais dos sujeitos envolvidas com ela ou com Harlow Shapley. O trabalho tem como base de análise das relações sociais e de gênero a Teoria Ator-Rede de Bruno Latour e a Epistemologia feminista de Londa Schienbinger. Assim, notou-se que, possivelmente, para além da pesquisa aprofundada, Harlow Shapley, ganhou mais destaque entre os astrônomos da época por sua influência acadêmica e que o protagonismo de Henrietta Leavitt vem crescendo a passos lentos atualmente, devido a estudos da história em que ela se inseria. Este trabalho buscou evidenciar que tratar de História e Gênero no ensino de Ciências pode motivar mais meninas no engajamento do fazer científico e como um inesperado mas feliz desdobramento se desenvolveram duas atividades didáticas que abordam esse episódio histórico.
Translation - English This research is about Science Teaching, History, Philosophy, and Sociology of Science and the gender issue in the scientific world. With these three pillars, it is argued that the teaching of science contextualized with the discussion of a historical event in which a woman is central seeks an attempt to assist the engagement of women in the area. The woman who stood out here was Henrietta Leavitt (1868 – 1921), a computer at the Harvard Observatory, who in this role arrived at the Period-Luminosity Relation, a tool that would later be essential for the development of methods for estimating large distances in space. One of the people who continued to study the relation was Harlow Shapley (1885 – 1972), an American astronomer who, because of his research, peers quoted him much more than she was. Henrietta Leavitt was among the first women hired at the Observatory, so her social context was pioneering outside the domestic sphere from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Considering the gender relationships throughout her life, especially concerning the establishment of the Period-Luminosity Relation, we intend to understand how Leavitt was seen in the scientific construction of this concept. The research methodology we use is document analysis, mainly newspaper clippings of that period, scientific articles in the area, correspondence, and excerpts from the personal diaries of people involved with her or Harlow Shapley. The research has as a base the analysis of the social and gender relations on Bruno Latour's Actor-Network Theory and Londa Schienbinger's Feminist Epistemology. Therefore, we noted that, in addition to in-depth research, Harlow Shapley possibly gained more prominence among astronomers of the time because of his academic influence. It was also noted that Henrietta Leavitt's role has been growing slowly nowadays, due to studies of the history in which she was inserted. This work sought to show that dealing with History and Gender in the Science Teaching can motivate more girls to engage in scientific work and, as an unexpected but fortunate outcome, two didactic activities have been developed addressing this historical episode.
