Bio

My name is Cristiano
Zwiesele do Amaral
and, as you can infer from my first Teutonic surname
combined with the Lusophone given name and the second surname, I am a half-breed.
This Germanic surname means in a lost dialect “two-souls” (“Zwei Seelen” in
German and “Twee Zielen” in Dutch). But I feel myself I have many more than
only 2 souls. Each language I speak accounts for another one (and another me)! That´s
the environment I was born into: A mother speaking Dutch to me, the rest of her
family speaking German, a father speaking Portuguese, and his mother, Italian.

Nevertheless, I
consider Portuguese and Dutch to be my true native languages, in particular
after I emigrated in my late twenties to The Netherlands, where I lived for 19
years, until I came to Portugal 4 years ago.

I am a Dutch
citizen
although born and raised in Brazil, where I graduated twice in languages, literature,
and linguistics
at USP, University of São Paulo. The first one in
German and French, after which I specialized one semester in translation and
interpretation at the Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz in Germersheim,
Germany
. The second graduation was in Modern Greek philology, and
once graduated I went to Greece, where I received 3 scholarships from the Greek
government.

Nevertheless,
my interest in languages
goes back to my childhood, when I was 8, I started having French classes
and 2 years later in Spanish as well. And I´ve been working with languages
since I was 18, teaching them and informally translating as well. I taught at
schools, universities, language institutes and companies for which I worked
directly. All these activities went on in the years I spent in The Netherlands.
Once there, I also started translating Dutch and Flemish literatures. I have so
far translated 26 books. I have been accredited by the Dutch and the Flemish
Foundations of Literature as one of the 3 Dutch literature translators into
Portuguese. I evaluate from time-to-time translation fragments of books to add
candidates to our list of translators into Portuguese. Through a programme of
the University of Utrecht alongside with the ELV (Expertise Literair Vertalen)
Association, and the University of Antwerp I was invited a few times to give 2
weeks long workshops on literature translation techniques into Brazilian
Portuguese.

After almost 4
years living in Portugal (working as a Social Media Content Moderator for the
Dutch and German markets), I can say that my Continental Portuguese is just as
good as the Brazilian variant.

Tired of
working as an executive for multinational companies, I decided to go back to
translating and teaching, my true passions, in which my best skills lie.

Throughout my career, I have acquired quite a
good of expertise in everything that has to do with languages. Accordingly, I
have the necessary skills to conduct business on a professional and managerial
level to improve customers´ satisfaction, their retention and positive business
results through effective communication and organization in the final product
of my translations.
