A "leaf" category is an extension of the main category you are trying to list in. Next to the main category you wish to list in, click open the + box next to it, & this will give you all the relevant sub sections of the category.
For example, if you had a treadmill for sale, you would select "exercise & equipment", open the + box next to it, then select its sub category "treadmill",then click OK. Hopefully you shouldn't get that error message.
