Off topic: Can you plug e.g. cell phone adapters to car cigarette lighters in Europe as in the US?

Could anyone tell me if the automobile cigarette lighters in Germany, France and Spain would be the same as in the US? I mean in terms of being able to plug in a cell phone adapter or other device? Thanks in advance!

I am from Italy and I live currently in US, and I have been able to charge my italian cellphone here on a US car, using the adapter I bought and carried from Italy.

So I think that it should be no problem.

Hi Anne,

as the standard car battery voltage is 12V DC around the world, you can use your adapter anywhere.

I use mine both in the US and Europe, and it works fine.
I also use my Radio Shack adapter in Europe to charge my laptop batteries.

Some of the lower end rental cars don't have the cigarette lighter any more (it has happened to me!)
