I downloaded the free version of CafeTran and want to import some translations already done in Word to build up my Translation Memory. How does it work? | | |
Hello Anita, CAFETRAN’s ALIGNMENT FEATURE CafeTran does offer an alignment feature, which allows you to create a translation memory (TMX) that you can then reuse. It offers two segmentation modes for its alignment feature: - Automatic segmentation. You can use this when the two documents are extremely similar segmentation-wise. - Progressive segmentation. It offers two segmentation modes for its alignment feature: - Automatic segmentation. You can use this when the two documents are extremely similar segmentation-wise. - Progressive segmentation. This allows you to interactively align the document, merge or split source/target segments, etc. It is the default and preferred option, and it is documented here: https://cafetran.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/6000189225-progressive-alignment-of-two-documents Note: In the Dashboard (the first screen you see when you open CafeTran), you need to click on the menu button (the one with two ranges of three horizontal lines), then Project type > Align two documents. By the way, this is the link to the official CafeTran Espresso knowledge base: https://cafetran.freshdesk.com/support/solutions PERSONAL COMMENT While the offered interactive alignment feature is good for short documents, it can be a little complex to figure out, especially if this is your first use of the software. For longer documents, a more automated, less manual approach is recommended. In fact, I suggest you try out some other alignment tools as well, to find which suits you better. When you have produced Translation Memories (TMX files), you can then easily use them in CafeTran Espresso or any CAT tool for that matter. Also, bear in mind the free version of CafeTran Espresso has a limit of 1,000 translation units for attached Translation Memories. OTHER ALIGNMENT TOOLS Here are some other alignment tools you may wish to consider: LF Aligner (free, offline) - https://sourceforge.net/p/aligner/wiki/Home/ is an excellent alignment tool. it does an excellent job in automatic alignment, then let’s you review the result, opening an easy interface for splitting and merging source/target segments and fixing any alignment error. This is the one I recommend the most. WordFast Aligner (free, online) - https://www.wordfast.net/?go=align PlusTools (free MS Word add-in that can handle various tasks, including document alignment) - https://www.wordfast.net/wiki/PlusTools YouAlign.com (free, online, registration needed, 1MB max file size) - based on AlignFactory, a powerful automated document alignment tool. TM-Town (online, registration needed) - has an automatic alignment tool with manual intervention - https://www.tm-town.com/ WordFast Anywhere (free, online, registration needed) - a CAT tool which also integrates an autoaligner - http://autoaligner.freetm.com/ Many other CAT tools, such as WordFast Pro, OmegaT, SmartCat and Memsource offer an alignment feature (not to mention SDL Trados, MemoQ, Déjà Vu, etc.). Also, there is a paid cross-platform aligner called Stingray - https://www.maxprograms.com/products/stingray.html Note: You may need to convert Word documents to txt documents for some of these tools. In this case, a nice cross-platform tool helps you do the conversion: AntFileConverter - http://www.laurenceanthony.net/software/antfileconverter/ Hope it helps, Jean
