Hello everybody, Going crazy here.... I am translating some subtitles for a series of documentaries. I have been provided with the Spanish subtitles in STL. What I usually do is load the STL into Subtitle Edit, save as .ASS or .SRT and work in Aegisub, and so I did with the first one. All good. I have tried the same system with the other eight videos and what happens in SE is this: the time stamps don't do anything, i.e. when I click on a line, I am not taken to that part of the video, the video goes straight to the end and stays there the moment I open it. When I convert to SRT or ASS and try to work in Aegisub (preferred method), all lines are timed at 9:59:59.00.
Client says they work fine for them, and has provided me with the SRT now, but I get the same problem, so I must be doing something wrong, but cannot figure out what... especially as it worked for the 1st video. Could it be something to do with line separaters or something?? Sorry I am kind of new to subtitling and don't know all the terminology. I thought I may have unwittingly changed some kind of setting, so I uninstalled and reinstalled both Aegisub and SubtitleEdit, but I am getting the same thing.
To give an idea, here are a few lines from the .TXT file:

It has been pointed out to me elsewhere that this means the video is more than 10 days long (which it obviously isn't), so I would have to change these colons to full stops or semi colons or something?
In SE it looks like:

Would appreciate any help here. If this is going to be complicated, I will happily pay someone to walk me through it over zoom or whatever.

- Where are the event numbers? If you open your subtitle in a plain-text editor, there should be event numbers above the timestamps.
- There should be an arrow sign in between the timestamps, represented by '-->' characters (w/o the single-quote marks).

- Where are the event numbers? If you open your subtitle in a plain-text editor, there should be event numbers above the timestamps.
- There should be an arrow sign in between the timestamps, represented by '-->' characters (w/o the single-quote marks).
- The timestamps are formatted wrong. For example, it should be 00:00:07,003
- Your first subtitle event duration is 10 hours (and not 10 days, digital time format doesn't work that way
 ). Still, I doubt any documentary video would be that long.
So, when you open your SRT subtitle in a plain-text editor, it should look like this:

If your subtitle is in WebVTT format, you can omit the event numbers. But remember to replace the commas with periods to separate seconds and milliseconds.

Try opening it back up as .txt in Notepad or copy + paste the subtitles using source view on SE and do a "find and replace".
Find: 10:00
Replace with: 00:00
Then either copy + paste that back into the source view on SE or just try to open it as a subtitling file.
That should work. It is quite a bizarre situation!

I would agree more with your first suggestion. This one practically turns the hour markers into minute markers. Although the milliseconds would (probably) get automatically converted into ,000. But the subtitles would still be desynchronized nonetheless.
@OP
Is there any particular reason why you don't want to work directly within Subtitle Edit? It can handle STL files without issues, no need to convert it to SRT which might be the cause of your problem.

The reason I am not using SE is because I am on a very tight deadline, Aegisub is what I am used to, and I haven't time to take a crash course in SE right now. In any case, it is in SE in the STL file that all those 10s appear - when I import the srt file into Aegisub they all change to 9.59.59.99. Client says it works fine for them...

So, I have done the first one manually, a pain and very time consuming, but client says I should be able to change the Aegisub settings so it would start at 10 hrs, not sure.... ▲ Collapse

I tried to recreate the problem. I thought I nailed it, but it turned out that I never got that error since the first place. 
Does the original STL subtitle work fine when you open it in your media player?
One more thing, try to open the original STL subtitle in a plain-text editor or MS Word. See if all those 10s already exist.
