I have been a part time translator for the last 2 years. I am now looking to take some courses and get certified. Can anyone please let me know of good online programs that lead to certification? I live in London and am planning to be here for the next 3 years.

Thank you for your help!
Guendalina

IoL DipTrans Feb 6, 2009

Hi Guendalina,

Since you live in the UK, I think a good option to get certified would be to take the IoL DipTrans examination (www.iol.org.uk) - this is a very prestigious exam, especially in the UK. The exam takes place every January, but you need to register before August.

Good luck!

Cristina.

Cristina has mentioned the CIoL Dip. Trans. qualification. The other main route in England is to take an MA in Translation Studies and a number of universities are now starting to offer such courses on-line.

The University fo BRISTOL offers a 'general' MA course which covers all aspects of Translation and can be taken anywhere: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/prospectus/postgraduate/2009/prog_details/ARTF/220 The same is true of the University of Portsmouth: http://www.port.ac.uk/courses/coursetypes/postgraduate/MATranslationStudiesDistanceLearning/

A 'brand new' (from September 2008) MA on-line course is also offered by City University, LONDON ( http://www.city.ac.uk/languages/courses/legal_translation.html ). It seems very interesting as it offers SPECIALIST training in legal translation and ALSO brings students and tutors together for four-day meetings four times a year in LONDON. (It could thus offer you personal networking opportunities 'on your doorstep' as well!)

Finally, as you may well know, the University of Westminster has a very good reputation in this field. I do not think their MA is availalbe on-line yet ( https://srs21live.wmin.ac.uk/ipp/D09FPTRQ.htm ), BUT I know that there were plans to offer some of their course modules on a part-time basis, so it might be useful to check carefully with them as to what they are intending to offer for the period when you want to begin your studies.

As can be gathered from the above (e.g. re. the City University course) the situation is very fluid and new courses are appearing regularly so do check carefully before you 'sign up'.

GOOD LUCK with whichever course you finally decide upon.
