I wonder what kind of question is this.
Yes, I turn it off but sometimes I forget to do it and the following day the PC is on.
But, how can this question be useful for our future?

I always turn it off at the end of my working day (it’s more of an habit than anything else) and the very first thing I do after waking up is turning it on... | | | Barbara Carrara Italy Local time: 07:20 Membro (2008) English to Italian + ... Query: how many more useless polls do you still have in store for us?
And, more generally, why do polls have to be featured twice on the site, as a stand-alone topic and as a forum thread? Don't tell us it is to increase website traffic, as this would be hardly an argument for suggesting polls as ludicrous as this one.

If you turn your computer off when not working, it will help the environment and save you money.
That's why I do it. And the fact not everyone does says a lot about the world today. | | | Samuel Murray Netherlands Local time: 07:20 Membro (2006) English to Afrikaans + ...

The main point of a poll is to elicit discussion about some random topic. Polls are, by definition, useless. If you want only serious discussion, you shouldn't read poll threads.
I often don't know when I'm finished with my computer for the day -- I get up from the desk and then simply don't return until the next day -- so I either turn it off or I lock the screen (and after a few minutes it goes to sleep). I always lock the screen when I get up from my chair; it's a habit I deliberately taught myself some years go precisely because I don't know when I'll be back whenever I go.
I just leave it be. Who doesn't have their computer set to hibernate after a while nowadays? I mean, it's a desktop, but still. I try to shut it down before going to bed if I remember, of course. It's also not like the 3 seconds it takes to wake up are that much better than the 5 seconds it takes to start.

So, when I read this in their FAQ, I expect to read appealing and interesting questions related to translation. So, I understand the questions asked by Susanna and Barbara.
However, I can understand that what can be appealing to me may not be to you, but that doesn't mean we should stay away from poll discussions, because every member can vote, participate and express their opinion.
In my case, if I read a question like this one, I simply don't discuss it and I don't vote, there is no excitement or encouragement to me.
Also, I don't see the point to discuss it, because it's irrelevant for my colleagues if I leave my pc turned off or not, and it won't add or bring anything new or useful. It's just my personal opinion... ▲ Collapse
It depends on what I'm doing next day, as sometimes I have stuff to do early in the morning. When that's the situation, I don't turn it off. | | | Tom in London United Kingdom Local time: 06:20 Membro (2008) Italian to English
My computer is set to turn itself on every morning at 0730 and turn itself off at 2300 unless I turn it off before that time.

Perhaps proz should just stop running any polls for a while, and perhaps for quite a while (and maybe even permanently). I saw one within the last few weeks that was created by a site user at one point, and for some reason, staff re-posted it. At first glance, several of the posters' comments seemed quite bitter and vitriolic. Who would want to stick around to read anything like that? I, for sure, didn't. I'd rather read something like American college professor and acclaimed literary translator's long essay, Why Translation Matters, instead of that specific forum. Most translators and and translation professors (in other words, academics) I know would.

Can I go against the tide on this one? Quick Polls are supposed to be light-hearted and many are amusing and fun, they are not scientific studies. Personally, I have a lot of fun on Proz.com and I appreciate the sense of humour of some fellow translators. No time for a smile? | | | Sense Of Humor | Aug 3, 2022 |
Yes, some of the translators who show up on the kudoz pages don't seem to have much of that anymore, either. Even some of the older ones.
