Do you keep a record of your annual income for statistical reasons?
No, but (of course) I keep a record of my annual income for tax purposes.

As my accountant says “Complete and organized records can mean tax savings”. What I keep is mainly for tax reasons than for statistics and anyway we are not talking about large companies here, so at the end of each year I always have a rough idea how things were even without my accountant’s annual report…

I keep track of my monthly, quarterly, biannual and annual income because I think it's interesting to see how my income evolves. It also allows me to know exactly when to accelerate, if necessary, or decelerate, if so desired.

Are we talking about some backup in a pink scrapbook with beloved kids/pets on the cover???

I have an Excel file where I list details of each job and the payments received, which are reflected on a separate table for each year showing monthly and annual volume (word-count), average rate and receivables from each client, and the income percentile each client represents within said year. I also have a separate table that shows me the word-count, percentage and income by language pair.

I do have a spreadsheet with all my invoices and payments, obviously, but you can't generate much in the way of statistics from it. It doesn't show individual jobs, for example (in many cases, I combine multiple jobs into a single invoice), nor does it show things like exact word counts or hours worked.

Of course, for tax purposes:) But I actually have a little system that goes beyond what is needed for tax records. A few years ago I started a simple Excel sheet to track the amount of time I spent on various tasks. I wanted to see how many hours I actually worked in total, including the time spent on admin tasks, research, marketing, etc. I then divide the number of hours worked in a month by the value of the projects completed in that period. I find it really useful.

I don’t really need to know which customer is top of the league and so on, but it makes me happy.

Not for statistical reasons, whatever that may be intended to mean. However, like most of our colleagues who have previously answered, I do have to keep a record of my invoices issued for tax purposes. I think we are obliged to keep these records for something like five years.
Since it's the start of the New Year, I'm doing some admin right now, and am about to issue my first bill of the year.
