Let’s say that in general my work is my CPD. Over the years, I have attended a few conferences and webinars, but I must say that I have been disappointed time and again as the information provided could often be summarised onto one sheet of paper. I attended a worthy summer university course in 2017 to learn about specific features of neologisms formation in Portuguese. | | | Lieven Malaise Belgium Local time: 23:24 Membro (2020) French to Dutch + ...
I hold a translation degree, I have built up 5 years of experience in a translation agency and am basically still learning every single day by doing what I love most: translation. You can follow an expensive training course for everything if you like, but as far as I'm concerned being a freelance translator is mostly a matter of self-learning. You don't need a training to find clients, to learn to communicatie (quit already if you need that), to learn about CAT tools, to learn about AI, and so o... I understand the large training offer, though: it's a revenue model. ▲ Collapse | | | Liena Vijupe Latvia Local time: 00:24 Membro (2014) French to Latvian + ...
Trainings can be useful when you already know what you need to learn and would benefit from some guidance, but, at least in our profession, most of them are a waste of time (and money, if you pay for them).

I have followed some online courses on different subjects, but I never thought of it as CPD training. Apart from formal education, reading, being observant and learning at work, the last time I participated in any of the sort by choice was probably some 25 years ago when I was very young and had a chance to attend a seminar about time management, aimed for business leaders. I was very excited about the possibility because serious people who had a business to run were taking time and paying a lot of money for it! I still remember how disappointed I was because I didn't learn anything new at all and most of what was discussed was just common sense to me, already then. ▲ Collapse

I did several courses during Covid about Legal English and they were completely free. They were well-planned, went over the different proper terms for different situations and broadened or even clarified my knowledge. The tests were also well thought-out.

I completed an official training course for online couching (a curator of online training groups) and feel myself fit for this job if the students are highly motivated. | | | About almost all mentioned topics | Nov 26, 2024 |
I'm a bit surprised to see that the average CPD participation is so small. I'm interested in learning new things and keeping up with developments, and this can be done quite easily at low costs or even for free. Just did the final test - passed it - linked to a webinar about preventive medicine that I attended yesterday. And last week's AI Summit had great stuff, too.
