I can't concentrate anywhere else. In the coffee shop, I will be distracted by the coffee. In the bookshop or library, I will be distracted by books. In the park, I will be distracted by birds. The only place I can translate is at my home office.
PS I can be distracted by surfing on the net.

For documentation, information, research and other "translation-related work", as close as possible to the source (preferably abroad - language, subject, people... the kind of "work" you can do during a break or a holiday.

... but before ProZ.com and Google, I would also do work in the library, and keep that option open for certain types of academic jobs.

I simply cannot carry several kilos of books and dictionaries about and have them handy as in the bookcase behind me. Even though the most important dictionaries are online, I still use a lot of ´real´ reference books.
I make fewer typos on the full-scale keyboard of the desktop computer.
I have to have my printer available and a good chair, not to mention the constant stream of coffee.

I dislike using a mobile phone for serious work.
There are no smells of other people´s smoke, perfume and after-shave...
I can plan to set up a temporary workplace in other places, but I am much happier at home. I take my working conditions as seriously as if the Industrial Health Service had its beady eye on me!
(It keeps my migraine at bay, and that is at least as effective!)

I really need my own office setting to be able to concentrate.
Before I became a freelance translator, I worked as a technical writer in a very small company, with one large office space where the programmers would always be discussing the intricacies of their programming challenges. I was extremely happy that I was allowed to work from home for 2 days a week (at my own request). Those were the days I was the most productive.

My most efficient and effective work is done in my home office with 2 x 22" screens, a good chair, the desk at the right height, a large keyboard with extra programmable buttons, perfect lighting, telephone + headset for hands-free work, ultrafast internet, large superslide mouse pad, no noise + smells + distractions. I can't get any of that in a coffee shop or on a park bench.

I set up a home office for a 2-month stay with my parents - uncomfortable chair, small desk, laptop (17") plus 19" monitor pinched from my Dad, horrible lighting, cell phone acting as an internet modem (HDSPA + excruciatingly expensive), loudspeaker on telephone and the laptop keyboard. I have a dodgy internet connection and every so often it goes on the blink for roughly the exact hours I work on a given day! I usually go to the free Wi-Fi coffee shops around here which also helps me get out of the house once in a while. It's sometimes nice to be surrounded by people again! It doesn't really affect my concentration. I tend to get more distracted at home because of the Internet whereas when I'm not in my comfort zone and haven't got all the time in the world (otherwise I ha... I do prefer working from home but it's nice to get out once in a while.

To give the brain a change of environment, ocasionally on the balcony at home with the lap-top.
Living on the edge of the Atlantic Forest, I am accompanied there by the amazing sounds of nature, and often "joined" by white-faced monkeys who descend to perch on the lower branches, eying me curiously...
It's a hard knock life..

Id love to go out to the park or even why not? a coffee shop, but I don't have a laptop.
So I work from home at my office space, I enjoy working alone, but sometimes I miss the fresh air in the mornings or the long walks from the office.
I also get to enjoy with my little 5 year old so that's priceless.
And I absolutely MUST have an ergonomic chair.

My colleague's place. We work as a team, she is native Spanish and I'm not, so this way we can maximise our skillset and work in both directions. In fact I'll be going there tonight because we have a couple of things to go over for each other before tomorrow.
I don't mind working in cafes or libraries, although it is never as comfortable or convenient as the home office.
I don't like working from cyber cafes because it is expensive, there are virtually no security or anti-virus meas... See more My colleague's place. The last time the 2 screens issue came up, I was dismissive and said it had no real purpose. However, after recently having had to use 2 screens due to an internet outage on my PC, I must admit that to my surprise, I actually found it quite convenient and might consider setting up another screen in future..

to be honest though, I do have issues with my laptop keyboard and much prefer to be in my own office to do translation.
